Joseph Blakeslee House
The Joseph Blakeslee House was a historic house at 1211 Barnes Road in Wallingford, Connecticut. Built in 1780, it was a good example of a late 18th-century Cape style residence. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. It collapsed and was demolished in 2008. Description and history The Joseph Blakeslee House stood at the northeast corner of Barnes Road (Connecticut Route 68) and Research Parkway in northeastern Wallingford. The parcel which it stood is nearly surrounded by commercial development. It was a -story wood-frame structure, with a gabled roof, central chimney, and clapboarded exterior. It was oriented facing east, with a low stone retaining wall in front. Its main facade was three bays wide, with a center entrance that was once topped by a four-light transom window. Wallingford, Connecticut
Wallingford is a town in New Haven County, Connecticut, United States, centrally located between New Haven and Hartford, and Boston and New York City. The population was 44,396 at the 2020 census. The community was named after Wallingford, in England. History The Connecticut General Assembly created the town on October 10, 1667. This original plot of land near the Quinnipiac River is now considered Main Street. Starting on May 12, 1670, there were 126 people who lived in temporary housing, and five years later in 1675 there were 40 permanent homes. In 1697 Wallingford was the site of the last witchcraft trial in New England. Winifred Benham was thrice tried for witchcraft and acquitted all three times. The 1878 Wallingford tornado struck on August 9 of that year. It killed at least 29 and possibly as many as 34 people in Wallingford, the most by any tornado event in Connecticut history. Connecticut Route 68
Route 68 is an east–west state highway in the U.S. state of Connecticut connecting the towns of Durham and Naugatuck. Route description Route 68 begins at Route 63 in Naugatuck. After crossing the Naugatuck River, it overpasses the Route 8 expressway, with access via Union Street (SR 723) and North Main Street (SR 710). Route 68 then leaves the Naugatuck River Valley and ascends to Prospect, where it intersects Route 69 in the center of town. It then descends once again into Cheshire, where it joins Route 70 for a 3.1 mile concurrency. In the center of Cheshire, the concurrency becomes a 0.15 mile triplex with Route 10. After the Route 70 concurrency ends, Route 68 becomes a 4 lane road as it enters Wallingford. The road narrows to 2 lanes as it passes through Yalesville where it intersects Route 150.
