John Pollard (politician)
John Pollard is a businessman and former politician from Hay River, Northwest Territories, Canada. He was a Member of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories from 1987 until 1995, serving as Minister of Finance. Pollard was elected to the Northwest Territories Legislature for the first time in the 1987 Northwest Territories general election, representing the Hay River electoral district. Pollard was returned by acclamation in the 1991 Northwest Territories general election. He retired from legislative politics at the end of his second term in 1995. In October 2006 he was elected mayor of Hay River. However, he resigned in January 2008, citing the combined workload of the position and the management of his own business interests. |

Hay River (South Slavey: ''Xátł’odehchee'' ), known as "the Hub of the North," is a town in the Northwest Territories, Canada, located on the south shore of Great Slave Lake, at the mouth of the Hay River. The town is separated into two sections, a new town and an old town with the Hay River/Merlyn Carter Airport between them. The town is in the South Slave Region, and along with Fort Smith, the town is home to one of the two regional offices. History The area has been in use by First Nations, known as the Long Spear people, as far back as 7000 BC. Yellowknifer
The ''Yellowknifer'' is a newspaper based in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories and owned by Northern News Services. It was first published on March 22, 1972 by J.W. (Sig) Sigvaldson, who remains the current publisher. Both a Wednesday and a Friday edition are printed weekly, with 2015 circulations of 3,911 and 4,082 respectively. Its mission statement is "having a ball and making a buck". Sigvaldson started the paper after leaving rival paper ''News of the North'' in 1971 after courting controversy from both the federal and municipal government, recruiting Jack Adderly who had also left the paper. Initial print runs were produced at home, using the bathroom as a darkroom. The paper was not commercially successful during its early years and was kept afloat by income from Sigvaldson's wife. Jane Mary "Ostler" Groenewegen (born November 8, 1956) is a territorial level politician from northern Canada and a former member of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories. Political career Groenewegen was first elected to a seat in the Northwest Territories Legislature in the 1995 Northwest Territories general election. She was returned by acclamation in the 1999 Northwest Territories general election. She was appointed to the cabinet by Premier Stephen Kakfwi and she served as Deputy Premier Minister of Health and Social Services, Minister Responsible for Seniors, Persons with Disabilities and the Status of Women. Groenewegen was elected to a third term in the 2003 Northwest Territories general election. She was not re-appointed to the cabinet and was elected Deputy Speaker. Sandy Lee
Sandy Lee (born 1964) is a South Korean-born-Canadian lawyer and politician, who was a member of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories from 1999 to 2011. Political career Territorial Assembly Lee was elected to the legislature for the first time in the 1999 Northwest Territories general election, defeating future MLA Dave Ramsay and another candidate. She was re-elected to her second term in office in the 2003 Northwest Territories general election, winning with a landslide 80 per cent of the vote. Northwest Territories (french: Territoires du Nord-Ouest) is a federal electoral district represented in the House of Commons of Canada. The electoral district covers the entire territory. This riding was created in 1962 from Mackenzie River riding. It was composed of the entire territory of the Northwest Territories. In 1979, the riding was divided into the ridings of Western Arctic and Nunatsiaq (later Nunavut). Following the creation of the territory of Nunavut in 1999, the riding of Western Arctic was made coterminous with the new Northwest Territories. After 1999, Western Arctic was an anomaly in that, unlike Nunavut and Yukon, it did not share the name of the territory with which it was coterminous.
