John McGuigan
John Joseph McGuigan (29 October 1932 – 12 August 2004) was a Scottish footballer who played as an inside-forward in the 1950s and 1960s. He started his career in the Scottish Football League with St Mirren before moving to England in 1955, where he played for several Football League clubs, including Southend United, Newcastle United, Scunthorpe United, Southampton and Swansea Town. Playing career McGuigan was born in Motherwell; his father had played football before the war with Motherwell. McGuigan played junior football for Muirkirk and Bo'ness United, before signing professionally with St Mirren in November 1953. In May 1955, he moved to England to join Southend United, where he stayed until June 1958, making 125 league appearances. He then moved to First Division Newcastle United for £2,250 in an exchange deal with Bill Punton joining Southend. Motherwell
Motherwell ( sco, Mitherwall, gd, Tobar na Màthar) is a town and former burgh in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, United Kingdom, south east of Glasgow. It has a population of around 32,120. Historically in the parish of Dalziel and part of Lanarkshire, Motherwell is the headquarters for North Lanarkshire Council. Geographically the River Clyde separates Motherwell from Hamilton to the west whereas the South Calder Water separates Motherwell from Carfin to the north-east and New Stevenston and Bellshill towards the north. Motherwell is also geographically attached to Wishaw and the two towns form a large urban area in North Lanarkshire, with both towns having similar populations and strong community ties. The Football League
The English Football League (EFL) is a league of professional football clubs from England and Wales. Founded in 1888 as the Football League, the league is the oldest such competition in the world. It was the top-level football league in England from its foundation until 1992, when the top 22 clubs split from it to form the Premier League. The EFL is divided into the Championship, League One and League Two, with 24 clubs in each division, 72 in total, with promotion and relegation between them; the top Championship clubs change places with the lowest-placed clubs in the Premier League, and the bottom clubs of League Two with the top clubs of the National League. Ted Bates (footballer)
Edric Thornton Bates MBE (3 May 1918 – 28 November 2003) was a former Southampton F.C. player, manager, director and president which earned him the sobriquet ''Mr. Southampton''. Ted was the son of Eddie Bates, who played cricket for Yorkshire and Glamorgan and football for Bolton Wanderers and Leeds United. He was the grandson of Billy Bates who was one of the finest all-rounders for England in the early years of international cricket. Playing career Bates was born in Thetford and joined Saints on his 19th birthday in 1937, transferring from Norwich City. He soon forced his way into the first team as a centre-forward. Barrie Thomas
Barrie Thomas (born 19 May 1937) is an English former professional footballer who played as a centre forward. Over the course of his career, Thomas made a total of 338 appearances in the Football League for five clubs over a period of fourteen years, scoring 211 goals. Early life Barrie Thomas was born on 19 May 1937 in Measham, Leicestershire. Career Thomas began his career as a youth player with Leicester City. His senior career began with Leicester City as a seventeen-year-old in 1954, but over the next three seasons, Thomas only managed to play in seven league games, scoring three league goals in the process. Thomas moved to Mansfield Town in 1957, and spent two seasons with the club, scoring 48 league goals in 72 league games. Thomas' next club was Scunthorpe United, moving there in 1959. Bill Punton (footballer, Born 1934)
William Hamilton Punton (born 9 May 1934) is a Scottish former footballer and manager. Born in Ormiston, East Lothian, Punton was a left-sided winger who played for Portadown before signing for Newcastle United in February 1954. He made his Football League debut in April 1954 against Manchester City, but did not appear in the first team again for almost 18 months. He made 23 league appearances during his four-year spell at the club. In July 1958, he was sold to Southend United in a part exchange deal which saw Southend's John McGuigan join Newcastle. A year later he joined Norwich City, where he made over 200 league appearances. He also scored for Norwich in the 1962 Football League Cup Final against Rochdale. He went on to play for Sheffield United, Scunthorpe and Yarmouth Town. At the end of his playing career, Punton moved into management, spending 20 years in charge of Great Yarmouth Town. The Football League First Division was a division of the Football League in England from 1888 until 2004. It was the top division in the English football league system from the season 1888–89 until 1991–92, a century in which the First Division's winning club became English men's football champions. The First Division contained between 12 and 24 clubs, playing each other home and away in a double round robin. The competition was based on two points for a win from 1888 until the increase to three points for a win in 1981. Scottish Junior Football League
The Scottish Junior Football League (SJL) was a Scottish football competition that, through various incarnations, existed from 1892 to 1947. It was based in the west of Scotland and largely consisted of Junior clubs that were not considered good enough for the major leagues of the time i.e. the Glasgow Junior Football League (GJL), the Central Junior Football League and the Lanarkshire Junior Football League. History The first SJL was formed in 1892 but, despite its title, was effectively a Glasgow district league. It was formed by ten clubs: five from the city and five from the neighbouring districts. Ashfield, Benburb, Parkhead and Vale of Clyde were among its founding members.
