John, his seven brothers and three surviving sisters were raised in the small village of Lanner. His early education was meagre: he took his candle and penny in the evenings to attend the small local dame school. Gwennap ( kw, Lannwenep (village), Pluw Wenep (parish)) is a village and civil parishes in England, civil parish in Cornwall, England. It is about five miles (8 km) southeast of Redruth.
