John Hall (cricketer, Born 1874)
John Peter Hall (20 August 1874 – 9 November 1925) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire between 1895 and 1897. Hall was born at Worksop, Nottinghamshire. His cricket career began in the 1895 when Derbyshire entered the County Championship. Hall scored one run in two innings in his debut match which Derbyshire won against Yorkshire and he made little impression apart from taking two catches, in his second game against Nottinghamshire, although the team went on to finish highly in the year's County Championship. Worksop
Worksop ( ) is a market town in the Bassetlaw District in Nottinghamshire, England. It is located east-south-east of Sheffield, close to Nottinghamshire's borders with South Yorkshire and Derbyshire, on the River Ryton and not far from the northern edge of Sherwood Forest. Other nearby towns include Chesterfield, Doncaster, Retford, Gainsborough and Mansfield. Worksop had a population of 41,820 as of the 2011 Census and it is twinned with the German town Garbsen. Nottinghamshire (; abbreviated Notts.) is a landlocked county in the East Midlands region of England, bordering South Yorkshire to the north-west, Lincolnshire to the east, Leicestershire to the south, and Derbyshire to the west. Derbyshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Derbyshire. Its limited overs team is called the Derbyshire Falcons in reference to the famous peregrine falcon which nests on the Derby Cathedral (it was previously called the Derbyshire Scorpions until 2005 and the Phantoms until 2010). Founded in 1870, the club held first-class status from its first match in 1871 until 1887. First-class Cricket
First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The etymology of "first-class cricket" is unknown, but it was used loosely before it acquired official status in 1895, following a meeting of leading English clubs. At a meeting of the Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) in 1947, it was formally defined on a global basis. Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket. Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1895 was the first season in which the English county cricket club Derbyshire played in the County Championship which had been established in 1890. The club settled their place by coming fifth with five championship wins. It was the club's 25th season although the matches in the period between 1888 and 1893 were not given first-class status.
