Derbyshire County Cricket Club In 1897
Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1897 was the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire had been playing for twenty-six years. It was their third season in the County Championship and they came fourteenth after failing to win a match, though they were exceptionally unlucky in losing by a single wicket to power clubs Lancashire and Yorkshire and being robbed by time of victory over Leicestershire late in the season. 1897 season Derbyshire played sixteen games in the County Championship and one against MCC. They did not win a match in the season, losing ten. They were missing two key bowlers: John Hulme, who had taken most wickets in 1896, did not play at all during the season; and George Porter, who underwent surgery in 1896 and retired from the game. This is a list of seasons played by Derbyshire County Cricket Club in English cricket, from the club's formation in 1870. Early years 1871–1887 Derbyshire played their first matches in 1871. For the first three years their only opponents were Lancashire. When Kent joined in 1874, by a quirk of scoring which was based on games lost, they were County Champion. The club was bedevilled by financial problems, and in 1888 the sporting press decided no longer to accord them first class status. Wilderness years 1888–1893 From 1888 Derbyshire's matches were not accorded first class status. Joseph Hancock
Joseph William Hancock (26 November 1876 – 23 May 1939) was an English first-class cricketer who played for Derbyshire from 1897 to 1900 and for Scotland in 1906. Hancock was born at Old Tupton, Derbyshire, the son of Alfred Hancock, a coal miner, and his wife Eliza. Hancock made his debut for Derbyshire in the 1897 season aged 20. In May against Lancashire he took 4 wickets at a cost of 140 runs. He played regularly for the next three years. In the 1898 season he achieved his best bowling performance with 5 for 61 against Yorkshire. The 1899 season was Hancock's best for batting, when his average reached 11.43 and he scored 43 not out against Hampshire. Hancock left Derbyshire in 1900 after playing three matches in the 1900 season. He turned out for Scotland in 1906 against the West Indies. William Chatterton
William Chatterton (27 December 1861 – 19 March 1913) was an English cricketer and footballer. He played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1882 and 1902 and for England on their tour of South Africa in 1891–92. He captained Derbyshire between 1887 and 1889 and scored over 10,000 runs in his first-class career as well as taking over 200 wickets. He played football for Derby County, being one of 19 sportsmen to achieve the Derbyshire Double of playing cricket for Derbyshire and football for Derby County. Life Chatterton was born at Thornsett, Birch Vale, Derbyshire, the son of David Chatterton, a cotton mill fireman, and his wife Hannah. In 1881 he was a cotton carrier in the mills at Newton Cheshire. Cricket career Chatterton started playing cricket for Derbyshire in the 1882 season and football for Derby County in 1884. Essex County Cricket Club
Essex County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Essex. Founded in 1876, the club had minor county status until 1894 when it was promoted to first-class status pending its entry into the County Championship in 1895, since then the team has played in every top-level domestic cricket competition in England. Essex currently play all their home games at the County Cricket Ground, Chelmsford. Yorkshire County Cricket Club is one of 18 first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Yorkshire. Yorkshire are the most successful team in English cricketing history with 33 County Championship titles, including one shared. Hampshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Hampshire. Hampshire teams formed by earlier organisations, principally the Hambledon Club, always had first-class status and the same applied to the county club when it was founded in 1863. Because of poor performances for several seasons until 1885, Hampshire then lost its status for nine seasons until it was invited into the County Championship in 1895, since when the team have played in every top-level domestic cricket competition in England. Warwickshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Warwickshire. Its T20 team is called the Birmingham Bears. Founded in 1882, the club held minor status until it was elevated to first-class in 1894 pending its entry into the County Championship in 1895. Harry Bagshaw
Harry Bagshaw (1 September 1859 – 31 January 1927), christened Henry Bagshaw, was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1887 and 1902 and was also a cricket umpire. Bagshaw was born at Foolow, Derbyshire, where he became a lead miner. He played for the Derbyshire Colts' team in 1880. His first-class career with Derbyshire began in the 1887 season when, as a 28-year-old, he played against Marylebone Cricket Club. Derbyshire lost first-class status in the 1888 season, but Bagshaw continued to take part in matches between future first-class sides and Derbyshire and was top scorer for the club in the 1892 and 1893 seasons. Derbyshire's matches were accorded first-class status again in the 1894 season. Bagshaw took part in his first County Championship match when Derbyshire joined the Championship in the 1895 season. Edward Houseman
Edward Outram Houseman (19 March 1869 – 10 April 1942) was an English cricketer. who played for Derbyshire in one game during the 1897 season. Houseman was born in Dronfield, Derbyshire. His only game for Derbyshire was against Lancashire in the 1897 season. He was out for a duck in the first innings and scored four runs in the second in a match which Derbyshire lost by a one-wicket margin. Houseman was a right-handed batsman. In 1893 Houseman married Ada Ingham in the Prsecot district and by 1904 they had moved to Westhoughton, Lancashire. Richard Steeples (30 April 1873 – 2 August 1946), was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire in 1897. Steeples was born at Somercotes, Alfreton, Derbyshire, the son of John Steeples, a coal miner. Steeples enjoyed a brief first-class career, playing three matches at county level during the 1897 season when the club was short of regular bowlers. He made his debut against Yorkshire, in which he took three wickets, but Derbyshire lost the game by a single wicket. Steeples played just two more times in first-class cricket for Derbyshire, and took four wickets against Nottinghamshire. Steeples was a right-handed batsman and played five innings in three first-class matches with an average of 4 and a top score of 16. He was a right-arm medium-fast bowler and took nine first-class wickets at an average of 23.77 and a best performance of 4 for 73.
