John Clark Monks
John Clark Monk(s) (25 February 1760 – 9 December 1827), also known as the Hanging Sailor of Perryman, was a sea captain. Monks was born in Siston near Bristol, England and died in 1827. He is entombed at Perryman Cemetery, Maryland, USA, along with both his wives (first wife Mary and second wife Sarah Rebecca Lewis). He apparently left his crew instructions that when he died, his feet were not to touch dry land for any reason. To meet that requirement his body was lowered into an underground vault, where it was suspended from the ceiling with chains. To ensure that the casket didn't rot away, it was made of metal, and Monks' body was soaked in rum. Siston
Siston (pronounced "sizeton") is a small village in South Gloucestershire, England. It is east of Bristol at the confluence of the two sources of the Siston Brook, a tributary of the River Avon. The village consists of a number of cottages and farms centred on St Anne's Church, and the grand Tudor manor house of Siston Court. Anciently it was bordered to the west by the royal Hunting Forest of Kingswood, stretching westward most of the way to Bristol Castle, always a royal possession, ''caput'' of the Forest. The local part of the disafforested Kingswood became Siston Common but has recently been eroded by the construction of the Avon Ring Road and housing developments. In 1989 the village and environs were classed as a conservation area and thus have statutory protection from overdevelopment. Perryman is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Harford County, Maryland, United States. The population was 2,342 at the 2010 census. History St. George's Parish Vestry House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Amtrak's Northeast Corridor high-speed rail line runs through the community; however, Amtrak and MARC trains do not stop as there is no station. Geography Perryman is located in southern Harford County at (39.468509, −76.213090). It is bordered to the west by Church Creek and the Bush River, an arm of Chesapeake Bay; to the south by Sod Run, an inlet of the Bush River; to the east by Chelsea Road and Aberdeen Proving Ground; and to the north by the city of Aberdeen.
