John Alexander McDougall
John Alexander McDougall (May 20, 1854 – December 17, 1928) was a businessman and politician in Alberta, Canada, He served as a municipal councillor, mayor and a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Early life John Alexander McDougall was born May 20, 1854 in Oakwood, Canada West (now Ontario) to Alexander J. McDougall and Janet Cummings. His father died in 1867 when John was thirteen. He left school and worked to support his family. In 1873, he moved to Fort Garry (now Winnipeg) where he worked as a fur trader and completed his education at Manitoba College. In 1877 this work brought him to Edmonton, where he decided to settle, but not before returning to Ontario in 1878 to marry his high school sweetheart, Lovisa Jane Amey (1878-1943), with whom he had three sons and three daughters. The Legislative Assembly of Alberta is the deliberative assembly of the province of Alberta, Canada. It sits in the Alberta Legislature Building in Edmonton. Manitoba College
Manitoba College was a college that existed in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, from 1871 to 1967, when it became one of the University of Winnipeg's founding colleges. It was one of the first institutions of higher learning in the city of Winnipeg and the province of Manitoba. The first graduating class had 12 members. History In 1864, the Kildonan Presbyterian Church, under the leadership of Reverend James Nisbet (who had been sent west to assist Kildonan's minister Reverend John Black), built a school (later to be named Nisbet Hall in his honour) in Kildonan. This school was located directly to the north and east of the church grounds along the river, near Main Street near Chief Peguis Trail. 1907 Edmonton Municipal Election
The 1907 municipal election was held December 9, 1907, for the purpose of electing a mayor and five aldermen to sit on the Edmonton City Council, Alberta, Canada as well as five public school trustees and six separate school trustees. There were also four proposed bylaws put to a vote of the electorate concurrently with the election. Positions to be elected There were eight aldermen on city council, but three of the positions were already filled: Cameron Anderson and Wilfrid Gariépy had been elected to two-year terms in 1906, and were still in office. James Walker had also been elected to a two-year term, but resigned, and had been replaced by Daniel Fraser, who was also still in office. Thomas Daly had been elected to a two-year term in 1906, but resigned and hadn't been replaced. Herbert Charles Wilson
Herbert Charles Wilson (December 7, 1859 – December 17, 1909) was a Canadian politician and physician. He served as mayor of the Town of Edmonton and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of the North-West Territories. Wilson was born in 1859 in what would become the province of Ontario. The son of a manufacturer, Wilson's family had extensive business interests in the area of Picton, Ontario. Wilson studied medicine and moved to Edmonton in 1882, one of the first physicians to settle there. He was appointed to official medical positions and, for several years, owned a drugstore in town. He served as a consultant to First Nations reserves near Edmonton and also became a director of many local corporations. He was elected to the Territorial council in 1885, and soon became its speaker. During his speakership, he helped to change the council's rules and procedures. 1895 Edmonton Municipal Election
The 1895 Edmonton municipal election was held on January 14, 1895 in Edmonton, Alberta to elect the town council (consisting of a mayor and six aldermen, each elected for a one-year term) and four trustees for each of the public and separate school divisions. This was the first election in Edmonton history in which there was a contested race for mayor, and also the first during which school trustee elections were held concurrently with those for town council. Wilson, the successful mayoral candidate, was an opponent of Matthew McCauley and although he won against McDougall (McDougall was put up as a last-minute candidate by council members who supported McCauley, even though they expected Wilson to win), the majority of the elected town council were McCauley supporters. Colin Strang (politician)
Colin Ferrie Strang (June 25, 1850 – December 10, 1900) was a politician in Alberta, Canada, and an alderman on Edmonton Town Council. Biography Strang was born in 1850 in Toronto to Struthers Strang, originally from Scotland and Janet Ferrie. He was educated in Hamilton. After a period working for hardware dealers W. McGivern & Co., in 1871 he moved to Winnipeg, where he worked as a bookkeeper (eventually as the head of his own accounting office) until moving to Edmonton in 1883. He became Edmonton's leading city accountant, and also worked as bank manager for Lafferty & Moore in 1890 and as business manager for the Moore and MacDowell sawmill in 1893. He was part owner of Ross Bros., a hardware firm. In 1892 he ran for alderman on Edmonton's first town council. He finished first of fourteen candidates (the top six were elected). Philip Daly
Philip Ernest Daly (December 1860 – January 22, 1923) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Biography Philip Ernest Daly was born in Neenah, Wisconsin in December 1860 to Charles B. Daly, from Kingston, Ontario. As a young adult, he was employed with the Merchant's bank in Belleville and Woodstock, Ontario. He came to Edmonton from Winnipeg in 1886 and bought a pharmacy from Herbert Charles Wilson, which he operated, along with a bank, until 1890, after which he went into the flour and feed business. He was elected to Edmonton's first town council in 1892, finishing sixth of fourteen candidates in an election in which the top six candidates were elected alderman.
