1894 Edmonton Municipal Election
The 1894 Edmonton municipal election was held January 2, 1894 to elect the town council, consisting of a mayor and six aldermen, each elected for a one-year term. Edmonton
Edmonton ( ) is the capital city of the Canadian province of Alberta. Edmonton is situated on the North Saskatchewan River and is the centre of the Edmonton Metropolitan Region, which is surrounded by Alberta's central region. Joseph Henri Picard
Joseph Henri Picard (February 18, 1857 – May 23, 1934) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Picard was born in Saint-Jean-de-Matha, Quebec on February 18, 1857. He apprenticed as a carpenter before coming west in 1884 to Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan, Fort Qu'Appelle and then Regina, Saskatchewan, Regina. In Calgary, he met Father Albert Lacombe, who suggested to him that he move to Edmonton, which he did in 1887. Once in Edmonton, he opened a general store, Larue & Picard; it was sold in 1907 when both he and his partner retired. In 1903, he married Martine Voyer. The couple had two sons. George Pringle Sanderson
George Pringle Sanderson (December 24, 1850 – October 27, 1940) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Biography George Sanderson was born December 24, 1850, in Carleton Place, Ontario. He moved to Winnipeg in 1877 to work as a blacksmith before moving further west, to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan by ox cart. He came to Edmonton in 1881 by buckboard. He became the settlement's second blacksmith and first locksmith. He returned temporarily to Winnipeg in 1883 to marry Julia Simpson, with whom he had four children. He became Edmonton's first fire chief in 1892, the same year as he ran in Edmonton's first election for town council. He failed to become alderman, finishing in a tie for eighth of fourteen candidates (the top six were elected). James Goodridge
James Goodridge (1852 – March 13, 1900) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Biography Goodridge was born in 1852 in Vaughan, Canada West. He later moved to Winnipeg before coming west to Edmonton by ox-train in 1882. Once in Edmonton, he went into business as a boarding house-operator before building Jasper House, Edmonton's first brick hotel, the same year. Jasper House, which was eventually renovated into the Hub Hotel, also served as Goodridge's home. He was elected to Edmonton's first town council in 1892, finishing fourth of fourteen candidates in the aldermanic race (the top six candidates were elected). Cornelius Gallagher (Canadian Politician)
Cornelius Gallagher (December 31, 1854 – October 27, 1932) was a meat merchant and politician in Alberta, Canada. He served as a municipal councillor and briefly as the third mayor of Edmonton. Gallagher was born in New Brunswick in 1854, the son of an Irish immigrant father. After attending the schools of his birthplace, he moved west to Winnipeg with his family, and became involved in the family meat packing business, established by his father. He would soon move west again to what would later become the province of Saskatchewan, where he would continue his business, providing his product to the local police establishments and soldiers during the North-West Rebellion. After his contracts expired there, Gallagher would move again further west, to Edmonton, where he would permanently settle. Charles Sutter
Charles William Sutter (November 19, 1856 – August 23, 1922) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Biography Sutter was born in Toronto. As a child, his family moved to Perth County where his father died in 1867. Sutter worked on the family's farm for three years, and then was apprenticed as a tailor in Toronto for another four. In 1875, he moved to Winnipeg to work for the city's leading merchants, Higgins & Young. In 1879, Sutter set out by foot for Edmonton with James Ross, one horse, and a Red River ox cart, arriving 76 days later. He became a partner in John Sinclair & Co. in the dry goods and grocery business until it dissolved in 1885. James Ross (Alberta Politician)
James Ross (August 14, 1851 – June 21, 1936) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Biography Ross was born August 14, 1851, in Toronto. He received his apprenticeship in tinsmithing and worked as a journeyman. He moved to Edmonton in 1878 and established a tinshop in 1882. In 1883, he created the Ross Brothers general hardware store with his brother, Frederick. They sold the business in 1912. He was director of the Western Canadian Vinegar Company and Vice President of the Alberta Milling Company. James Ross married Ellen McBeath of Edmonton; the pair had seven children. He was active with the Freemasons, Methodist Church, and the Liberal Party of Alberta. In 1892, Ross ran for alderman on Edmonton's first town council. John Alexander McDougall
John Alexander McDougall (May 20, 1854 – December 17, 1928) was a businessman and politician in Alberta, Canada, He served as a municipal councillor, mayor and a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Early life John Alexander McDougall was born May 20, 1854 in Oakwood, Canada West (now Ontario) to Alexander J. McDougall and Janet Cummings. His father died in 1867 when John was thirteen. He left school and worked to support his family. In 1873, he moved to Fort Garry (now Winnipeg) where he worked as a fur trader and completed his education at Manitoba College. In 1877 this work brought him to Edmonton, where he decided to settle, but not before returning to Ontario in 1878 to marry his high school sweetheart, Lovisa Jane Amey (1878-1943), with whom he had three sons and three daughters. Colin Strang (politician)
Colin Ferrie Strang (June 25, 1850 – December 10, 1900) was a politician in Alberta, Canada, and an alderman on Edmonton Town Council. Biography Strang was born in 1850 in Toronto to Struthers Strang, originally from Scotland and Janet Ferrie. He was educated in Hamilton. After a period working for hardware dealers W. McGivern & Co., in 1871 he moved to Winnipeg, where he worked as a bookkeeper (eventually as the head of his own accounting office) until moving to Edmonton in 1883. He became Edmonton's leading city accountant, and also worked as bank manager for Lafferty & Moore in 1890 and as business manager for the Moore and MacDowell sawmill in 1893.
