"Granite City" is the informal name for the mining settlement located near Granite Creek. Established during the 1885 gold rush, Granite Creek townsite is now a ghost town in the Similkameen region of British Columbia, Canada. Early years A cowboy and sometimes prospector named Johnny Chance discovered gold in Granite Creek in 1885. The discovery of gold led to the creation of a mining settlement, sometimes informally called "Granite City", in 1885. The federal Post Office named "Granite Creek" was opened on May 1, 1886. It remained open with only one temporary closure, until March 31, 1918. Granite Creek lay deep in the remote Tulameen country of southern British Columbia. By 1886 Granite Creek contained 300 European prospectors and 100 Chinese. Neville Langrell "Bill" Barlee (October 15, 1932 – June 14, 2012) was a Canadian politician who was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia as a New Democrat in 1988. He served as Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food from 1991 until 1993 and then as Minister of Small Business, Tourism and Culture from 1993 until 1996. Barlee was also well known for his popular TV show on the history of Canada West which he co-hosted with Mike Roberts. This award-winning television series ''Gold Trails and Ghost Towns'', ran from 1986 to 1996 on five different networks nationwide. The show is still seen in reruns. Granite Creek is a creek and townsite in British Columbia located in the Similkameen region. Granite Creek flows north into the Tulameen River and joins that river approximately one and a half miles to the east of Coalmont, British Columbia Coalmont was a tiny mining town, northwest of Princeton, British Columbia, Canada, on the north bank of the Tulameen River. The population of Coalmont is roughly 100 full-time residents. It is near the community of Tulameen and Otter Lake and ....
