Joel John
Joel John is an American politician and former member of the Arizona House of Representatives. A member of the Arizona Republican Party, he served alongside Democrat Brian Fernandez in Arizona's 4th legislative district. Career John was born and raised in Buckeye, Arizona. He comes from a family of farmers who have been in Arizona since the late 1800s, and in the Buckeye region since the 1950s. Before his legislative career, John was a music teacher at Buckeye Elementary School. As a first-time candidate in 2020, John won his seat after placing second in the district's general election, thereby defeating Democratic incumbent Geraldine Peten. The Arizona State House of Representatives is the lower house of the Arizona Legislature, the state legislature of the U.S. state of Arizona. The upper house is the Senate. Brian Fernandez (politician)
Brian Fernandez is an American politician who is State Senator for the Arizona 23rd Legislative District and former member of the Arizona House of Representatives from the 4th legislative district beginning in 2021. He was appointed to the seat after incumbent Representative Charlene Fernandez, his mother, resigned the seat to become Director of Rural Development for the United States Department of Agriculture. He is a member of the Democratic Party. Fernandez is a sixth generation native of Yuma and a graduate of Arizona State University. Prior to joining the legislature, he volunteered for several political campaigns, including those of former Governor Janet Napolitano, Congressmen Ruben Gallego and Congressman Ed Pastor. Geraldine Peten
Geraldine Peten (December 14, 1947 – December 13, 2023) was an American politician who served in the Arizona House of Representatives, representing District 4. She was appointed by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors in 2017 to replace former representative Jesus Rubalcava. Peten was a Democratic Party (United States), Democrat and was the seatmate of the Democratic Leader of the Arizona House of Representatives Charlene Fernandez. The Arizona Capitol Times interviewed her in August 2017. An educator, she was African American. Peten died on December 13, 2023, just one day shy of turning 76. Matt Gress is a politician and Republican member of the Arizona House of Representatives elected to represent District 4 in 2022. Early career & education Gress grew up in rural Oklahoma and graduated from the University of Oklahoma, where he was selected for the Harry S. Truman Scholarship. Gress went on to be a public school teacher as part of the Teach for America program. He also received his Masters degree from Syracuse University. In Arizona, Gress worked as an analyst for the non-partisan Joint Legislative Budget Committee, and later as Director of the Governor's Office of Strategic Planning and Budgeting, under former Governor Doug Ducey. Buckeye is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States, and is the westernmost suburb in the Phoenix metropolitan area. As of the 2020 census the population was 91,502, up from 50,876 in 2010 and 6,537 in 2000. It was the fastest-growing city in the United States for both 2017 and 2018. Arizona's 4th legislative district is one of 30 in the state, consisting of a section of Maricopa County. As of 2023, there are 70 precincts in the district, all in Maricopa, with a total registered voter population of 168,929. The district has an overall population of 244,298. Following the 2020 United States redistricting cycle, the Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission (AIRC) redrew legislative district boundaries in Arizona. According to the AIRC, the district is highly competitive politically.
