Jiří Čeřovský
Jiří Čeřovský (born 23 May 1955 in Semily) is a Czech regional politician and former athlete. He is a member of Civic Democratic Party. Life and career Čeřovský graduated from Charles University with a PhD in biology and chemistry. In the 1970s, he had reached excellent results in athletics (he won all Czechoslovakian masterships from 1975 to 1983 and had represented Czechoslovakia in world championships). Later Čeřovský taught biology at the Sport School in Jablonec nad Nisou. After the fall of communism in Czechoslovakia (1989), he became a member of the city council of Jablonec nad Nisou. Semily
Semily (; german: Semil) is a town in the Liberec Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 8,100 inhabitants. Administrative parts Town parts of Bítouchov and Podmoklice and the village of Spálov are administrative parts of Semily. Geography Semily is located about southeast of Liberec. It lies on the confluence of rivers Jizera and its left tributary Oleška. There is a nature reserve called Jizera Valley. Most of the municipal territory lies in the Giant Mountains Foothills. In the southwest, it extends into the Ještěd–Kozákov Ridge. The highest peak of the territory is Medenec hill with an altitude of . History The first written mention of Semily is from 1352, when existence of a church is mentioned. In the middle of the 19th century, the settlement transformed into a wealthy town when the industrialization arrived and the development of rail transport occurred. Velvet Revolution
The Velvet Revolution ( cs, Sametová revoluce) or Gentle Revolution ( sk, Nežná revolúcia) was a non-violent transition of power in what was then Czechoslovakia, occurring from 17 November to 28 November 1989. Popular demonstrations against the one-party government of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia included students and older dissidents. The result was the end of 41 years of one-party rule in Czechoslovakia, and the subsequent dismantling of the command economy and conversion to a parliamentary republic. On 17 November 1989 (International Students' Day), riot police suppressed a student demonstration in Prague. The event marked the 50th anniversary of a violently suppressed demonstration against the Nazi storming of Prague University in 1939 where 1,200 students were arrested and 9 killed (see Origin of International Students' Day). Jablonec Nad Nisou
Jablonec nad Nisou (; german: Gablonz an der Neiße) is a city in the Liberec Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 45,000 inhabitants. It is the second-largest city in the region. It is a local centre for education, and is known for its glass and jewelry production. The town centre is well preserved and is protected by law as an urban monument zone.
