Jim Payne (golfer)
James Robert Payne (born 17 April 1970) is an English professional golfer. Payne was born in Louth, Lincolnshire. He had a promising career as a tournament golfer which petered out by his early thirties, partly due to injury problems which had required him to undergo a spinal fusion operation at the age of 24. As an amateur he won the 1991 European Amateur and the British Youths Open Amateur Championship. He played with Jack Nicklaus in the final round of the 1991 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale and finished as leading amateur. He turned professional after playing in the Walker Cup later that year. In 1992 Payne was Rookie of the Year on the European Tour. He won two European Tour events, the 1993 Turespana Iberia Open de Baleares and the 1996 Italian Open. His last season on the European Tour was 2000. Ryder Cup
The Ryder Cup is a biennial men's golf competition between teams from Europe and the United States. The competition is contested every two years with the venue alternating between courses in the United States and Europe. The Ryder Cup is named after the English businessman Samuel Ryder who donated the trophy. The 1991 European Amateur Team Championship took place 26–30 June at Real Club de la Puerta de Hierro in Madrid, Spain. It was the 17th men's golf European Amateur Team Championship. Venue The hosting club was established in 1895 as a polo club. Its first 18-hole golf course, located in the northwest of Madrid, Spain, in the district of Moncloa, 5 kilometres from the city center, designed by Harry Colt, opened in 1914. Tom Simpson designed a new 9-hole course in the 1940s and John Harris designed another nine holes in 1968. The European Amateur Team Championship is a European amateur team golf championship for men organised by the European Golf Association which was introduced in 1959. The championship was played in odd-numbered years from 1959 to 2007 and has been played annually since 2008 (with the exception of 2012). 1991 Walker Cup
The 1991 Walker Cup, the 33rd Walker Cup Match, was played on 5 and 6 September 1991, at Portmarnock Golf Club, Portmarnock, County Dublin, Ireland. The event was won by the United States 14 to 10. Format The format for play on Thursday and Friday was the same. There were four matches of foursomes in the morning and eight singles matches in the afternoon. In all, 24 matches were played. Each of the 24 matches was worth one point in the larger team competition. If a match was all square after the 18th hole extra holes were not played. The St Andrews Trophy is a biennial men's team golf tournament contested between teams of amateur golfers representing Great Britain & Ireland and the Continent of Europe. It takes its name from St Andrews in Scotland. It was first played in 1956 and takes place in even-numbered years; Great Britain & Ireland plays in the United States in the Walker Cup in odd-numbered years. The Jacques Léglise Trophy is an annual amateur boys' team golf competition between Great Britain & Ireland and the Continent of Europe. It was first played in 1977, as a one-day match before the Boys Amateur Championship, but since 1996 it has been played as a separate two-day match. Northern Open
The Northern Open is a golf tournament played annually in Scotland since 1931. For some years it was one of only two 72-hole tournaments on the "Tartan Tour", the PGA Tour in Scotland's schedule, the other being the Scottish PGA Championship, but since 2019 the event has been played over 36 holes. Patrik Sjöland
Patrik Sjöland (born 13 May 1971) is a Swedish professional golfer. Early life Sjöland was born in Borås. Professional career He turned professional in 1990 and after several season on the second tier Challenge Tour, graduated to the European Tour for the start of the 1996 season. His most successful year by far was 1998, when he finished 5th on the European Tour Order of Merit and featured in the top 50 of the Official World Golf Rankings. After a poor 2005 season, during which he slipped outside the top 100 on the Order of Merit and lost his European Tour card, he took a break from the tour, playing just two tournaments in 2006. The 1996 European Tour was the 25th official season of golf tournaments known as the PGA European Tour. The 1996 season saw co-sanctioning arrangements expand, with the PGA Tour of Australasia's Heineken Classic joining three Southern Africa Tour events on the schedule. Anders Gillner (born 6 August 1967) is a Swedish former professional golfer who played on the European Tour. Gillner represented Sweden at the 1984 European Boys' Team Championship at the Royal St George's Golf Club.
