1991 Walker Cup
The 1991 Walker Cup, the 33rd Walker Cup Match, was played on 5 and 6 September 1991, at Portmarnock Golf Club, Portmarnock, County Dublin, Ireland. The event was won by the United States 14 to 10. Format The format for play on Thursday and Friday was the same. There were four matches of foursomes in the morning and eight singles matches in the afternoon. In all, 24 matches were played. Each of the 24 matches was worth one point in the larger team competition. If a match was all square after the 18th hole extra holes were not played. Rather, each side earned ½ a point toward their team total. The team that accumulated at least 12½ points won the competition. If the two teams were tied, the previous winner would retain the trophy. Portmarnock Golf Club
Portmarnock Golf Club is a links golf club in Portmarnock, County Dublin, Ireland, located close to Dublin Airport. The golf course is often rated as one of the top courses in the UK and Ireland and is also often included in lists of the top 100 golf courses in the world. History On Christmas Eve 1893, an insurance broker named W. C. Pickeman and his friend George Ross rowed over from Sutton to Portmarnock peninsula to explore the possibility of creating a golf links. The peninsula is about two miles long and covers over 500 acres. The course opened on Saint Stephen's Day 1894 with nine holes. It was extended to eighteen holes in 1896 with a new clubhouse and a further nine holes were added in 1971. The championship course follows the original layout although considerably lengthened (over 7,500 yards of the Championship tees). Mitch Voges (born November 28, 1949) is an American amateur golfer. Voges played college golf at Brigham Young University and United States International University. Voges won the 1991 U.S. Amateur. Mike Sposa
Mike Sposa (born June 5, 1969) is an American professional golfer. Sposa was born in Teaneck, New Jersey. He played college golf at the University of Tennessee where he was an All-American in 1990 and 1991 and won the SEC Championship in 1990. He played on the 1991 Walker Cup team where he teamed with David Duval for a pair of wins in foursomes. Sposa played on the Nationwide Tour and PGA Tour from 1994 to 2007. On the Nationwide Tour, 1994–96, 1998, 2004–05, and 2007, his best finish was a win at the 1998 Nike Boise Open. Jay Sigel
Robert Jay Sigel (born November 13, 1943) is an American professional golfer. He enjoyed one of the more illustrious careers in the history of U.S. amateur golf, before turning pro in 1993 at age 50, when he became a member of the Senior PGA Tour, now known as the PGA Tour Champions. Early years Born and raised in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, Sigel grew up playing golf at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. Thomas Cregg Scherrer (born July 20, 1970) is an American professional golfer. Scherrer was born in Syracuse, New York and grew up in Skaneateles, New York. Robert Anthony May (born October 6, 1968) is an American professional golfer. He lost to Tiger Woods in a three-hole playoff for the 2000 PGA Championship at Valhalla. Franklin Langham (born May 8, 1968) is an American professional golfer. Langham was born in Thomson, Georgia. He played golf at the University of Georgia from 1989 to 1991 and was named an All-American in 1991. He played on the 1991 Walker Cup team.
