Jim Horsman
James Deverell Horsman, (born July 29, 1935) is a politician from Alberta, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1975 to 1993 and held numerous cabinet portfolios in the Government of Alberta. Early life James Deverell Horsman was born in Camrose, Alberta in 1935 to George Cornwall Horsman and Kathleen Deverell Horsman. He grew up in Meeting Creek with his grandparents while his mother and father served overseas in Second World War. His family later moved to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Horsman moved west in the 1950s to study at the University of British Columbia. At UBC, Horsman attained a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1959 and a year later attained a Bachelor of Laws. Camrose ( ) is a city in central Alberta, Canada that is surrounded by Camrose County. Located along Highway 13 it had its beginnings as a railroad hub. History The area around Camrose was first settled by Europeans around 1900. At that time the nearby settlement of Wetaskiwin was a major centre for pioneers; typically, it was the last stopping-off point before they set out in search of nearby land. The site that was to be Camrose was about a day's journey from Wetaskiwin along the railroad, which made it a popular place on the route of pioneers. 1975 Alberta General Election
The 1975 Alberta general election was held on March 26, 1975, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta to the 18th Alberta Legislature. The election was called on February 14, 1975 prorogued and dissolved of the 17th Alberta Legislature. The Progressive Conservative Party led by incumbent Premier Peter Lougheed won its second term in government in a landslide, taking over 62 per cent of the popular vote and winning 69 of the 75 seats in the legislature to form a majority government. The Social Credit Party saw its vote collapse. After 36 years in government from 1935 to 1971—virtually its entire history—it was ill-prepared for a role in opposition. The 1971 Alberta general election was the seventeenth general election held in the Province of Alberta, Canada on August 30, 1971, to elect seventy-five members of the Alberta Legislature to form the 17th Alberta Legislative Assembly. The Progressive Conservative Association of Alberta led by Peter Lougheed won 49 of 75 seats with 46.4 per cent of the popular vote in the new legislature to form a majority government. Lougheed's Progressive Conservatives defeated the incumbent Social Credit Party led by Premier Harry Strom who won 25 seats with 41.1 per cent of the popular vote. Harry Leinweber
Harry C. Leinweber (January 6, 1907 – March 19, 1992) was a politician from Alberta, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1961 to 1971 as a member of the Social Credit Party. Political career Leinweber served as a municipal Alderman for the city of Medicine Hat from 1944 to 1950. He ran for mayor twice but was unsuccessful. Leinweber first ran for a seat to the Alberta legislature in a by-election held on January 19, 1961, in the electoral district of Medicine Hat. He defeated three other candidates with just under half the popular vote to hold the district for Social Credit. In the 1963 general election Leinweber was re-elected with over 51% of the popular vote over three other candidates. 1967 Alberta General Election
The 1967 Alberta general election was held on May 23, 1967, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta to the 16th Alberta Legislature. The election was called after the 15th Alberta Legislature was prorogued on April 11, 1967, and dissolved on April 14, 1967. Ernest C. Manning led the Social Credit Party to its ninth consecutive majority government, winning 55 of the 65 seats in the legislature, despite getting less than 45 per cent of the popular vote. Although it was not apparent at the time, this proved to be an ominous sign for the party.
