Jelutong, Penang
Jelutong is a suburb of George Town in Penang, Malaysia. Located south of the Pinang River, Jelutong has been inhabited since as early as the late 18th century, when traders from Aceh and India settled around the area. It was once notorious as a turf for gangsters and triads until the 1980s, when urbanisation transformed the area into a residential suburb of George Town. Etymology Jelutong was named after the Jelutong tree, known scientifically as ''Dyera costulata''. It was believed that this species of trees was once abundant around the area now known as Jelutong. History Jelutong was already inhabited before the arrival of Captain Francis Light in 1786. Merchants from Aceh and India established resting places and villages along the mouth of Pinang River. In the mid-19th century, the then forested area was first cleared for agricultural purposes. Pelangi (means Rainbow in English) was 24-hour Indonesian language channel which broadcasts Indonesian films and dramas (as of 2011). This channel was only available on Astro in the Indo Pek package. Most of the programmes are available in Malay subtitles. The channel was a collaboration between Astro and NET. from Indonesia, and as such, NET. programs comprises for 100% of the channel's contents. Indo Pek Beginning 11 July 2011, Astro launched a new package named Indo Pek (means "Indo Pack" in English), which contains 2 new Astro channels named Bintang (Channel 141 on Astro) and Pelangi (Channel 142 on Astro). Dyera Costulata
''Dyera costulata'', the jelutong, is a species of tree in the family Apocynaceae. It grows to approximately 60 metres (200 ft) tall with diameters of 2 metres (5 to 6 ft), or even to 80 m (260 ft) tall with diameters to 3 m (10 ft), and boles clear and straight for 30 m (90 ft). It grows in Malaysia, Borneo, Sumatra and southern Thailand. Its natural distribution is scattered locales in low-elevation tropical evergreen forest. In addition, jelutong can be tapped for latex and from the 1920s through the 1960s, jelutong latex was an important source of chewing gum. Jelutong has been traditionally overharvested, and is a threatened species in many areas. It is a protected species in parts of Malaysia and Thailand. The tree is grown commercially for timber. The Pinang River (Malay: ''Sungai Pinang'') is a river that runs through the city of George Town in Penang, Malaysia. Stretching for approximately , the river separates George Town proper to the north and its suburb of Jelutong to the south. It also passes under the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway before emptying into the Penang Strait. Sungai Pinang also refers to the neighbourhood that exists along the river. Sanisvara Nethaji Rayer s/o Rajaji Rayer (born 11 June 1971) is a Malaysian politician and lawyer. He is also a member of Democratic Action Party (DAP), a component party in the Pakatan Harapan (PH) opposition coalition. He has served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Jelutong since May 2018.
