Jan Procházka (orienteer)
Jan Procházka (born 11 September 1984) is a Czech orienteering competitor and world champion. He won a gold medal in the relay at the 2012 World Orienteering Championships in Lausanne, together with Tomáš Dlabaja and Jan Šedivý. He runs for Finnish club Kalevan Rasti. Prochazka has also won silver at the 2004 JWOC Relay and the European Orienteering Championships The European Orienteering Championships were first held in 1962. Orienteering
Orienteering is a group of sports that require navigational skills using a map and compass to navigate from point to point in diverse and usually unfamiliar terrain whilst moving at speed. Participants are given a topographical map, usually a specially prepared orienteering map, which they use to find control points. Originally a training exercise in land navigation for military officers, orienteering has developed many variations. Among these, the oldest and the most popular is foot orienteering. For the purposes of this article, foot orienteering serves as a point of departure for discussion of all other variations, but almost any sport that involves racing against a clock and requires navigation with a map is a type of orienteering. World Orienteering Championships
The World Orienteering Championships (or WOC for short) is an annual orienteering event organized by the International Orienteering Federation. The first World Championships was held in Fiskars, Finland in 1966. They were held biennially up to 2003 (with the exception of 1978 and 1979). Since 2003, competitions have been held annually. Participating nations have to be members of the International Orienteering Federation (IOF). Originally, there were only two competitions: an individual race and a relay. In 1991, a short distance race (roughly 20–25 minutes) was added and a sprint race was added in 2001. The middle distance (roughly 30–35 minutes) replaced the short distance in 2003. Tomáš Dlabaja (born 13 October 1983) is a Czech orienteering competitor. World Champion in the relay at World Orienteering Championships 2012 in Switzerland along with Jan Sedivy and Jan Prochazka after nearly giving up the elite orienteering career the same year. This fast Czech runner got his breakthrough with a bronze medal at the World Games in 2005 in the mixed relay, with Petr Losman, Marta Štěrbová and Dana Brožková. Kalevan Rasti
Kalevan Rasti is an orienteering club based in Finland. Recently it has been one of the most successful clubs in world orienteering, winning the Jukola Relay, Jukola and Tiomila relays multiple times. The club won the Tiomila relay in 1983 with Risto Vairinen, Timo Ikonen, Timo Alapiha, Pasi Ikonen, Urpo Väänänen, Jussi Silvennoinen, Arto Muhonen, Markku Piironen, Hannu Pulli and Mika Ruuhiala in the team. It won also in 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014. JWOC
The Junior World Orienteering Championships (JWOC) are an annual orienteering competition. They were first held in 1990. Entry is open to national teams aged 20 and below as of 31 December in the year of competition. Representative countries must be members of the International Orienteering Federation (IOF). The European Orienteering Championships were first held in 1962. They have been held biennially since 2000. From 2020, the European Orienteering Championships will be held annually, with sprint events and forest events in alternate years. Format The competition format has changed several times.
