James Orr (Canadian Politician)
James Orr (April 23, 1826 – November 6, 1905) was an English-born political figure in British Columbia. He represented New Westminster in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1882 to 1890. He was born in Liverpool, the son of the Reverend Dean Orr, and came to America with his family at the age of six. Orr was educated in the United States and Ontario. He served as Clerk of the Police Court and Clerk Assessor and Collector for New Westminster. He explored for a railway route on behalf of the Colony of British Columbia in 1865. Orr also served as deputy paymaster for the Canadian Pacific Railway and operated a fishery in the Haida Gwaii area. New Westminster (provincial Electoral District)
New Westminster is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, Canada. It is the only electoral district in British Columbia to have existed for every general election. The riding is notable for a couple of reasons. It never voted for a Social Credit candidate during the Socred's era of dominance between 1952 and 1991. It was also represented by Byron Ingemar Johnson, the 24th Premier of British Columbia. During the 1990s, the riding was represented by Anita Hagen, who served as Deputy Premier of British Columbia and Minister of Education from 1991 to 1993 during the premiership of Mike Harcourt. The Legislative Council of British Columbia was an advisory body created in 1867 to the governor of the "new" Colony of British Columbia, which had been created from the merger of the old Colonies of Vancouver Island and British Columbia (a.k.a. the Mainland Colony, or the Gold Colony). The new colony, like its predecessors, did not have responsible government, and while its debates and resolutions carried considerable weight, executive power remained in the hands of the governor, who at the time of the council's founding was Frederick Seymour.
