Jacob Rupertus
Jacob Rupertus (1822/1823 – 1921) was an American handgun designer and manufacturer. He was born in Bavaria and died in Laurel Springs, New Jersey, on February 14, 1921.''Philadelphia Inquirer'', February 15, 1921 (Tuesday), "RUPERTUS--At Laurel Springs, Feb. 14th, JACOB, husband of the late Caroline Rupertus, aged 98 years. Relatives and friends invited to the service, Wed 2 P. M. at the Oliver H. Blair Bldg., 1820 Chestnut st." He was married to Caroline Bechtel circa 1849. Caroline was born Feb 12, 1831 in Leiterswiller, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France and died Feb 26, 1911 also in Laurel Springs. They were buried in the now defunct American Mechanics Cemetery in Philadelphia. This Jacob Rupertus should not be confused with another Jacob Rupertus 1827-1900 who also lived in Philadelphia, but was not involved in gun manufacturing. Pepper-box
The pepper-box revolver or simply pepperbox (also "pepper-pot", from its resemblance to the household pepper shakers) is a multiple-barrel firearm, mostly in the form of a handgun, that has three or more gun barrels in a coaxially revolving mechanism. Each barrel holds a single shot, and the shooter can manually rotate the whole barrel assembly to sequentially index each barrel into alignment with the lock or hammer, similar to rotation of a revolver's cylinder. Pepperbox guns have existed for all types of firelock firearms and metal cased ammunition systems used in breechloading firearms: matchlock, wheellock, flintlock, snaplock, caplock, pinfire, rimfire and centerfire.
