Jaan Mahlapuu
Jaan Mahlapuu (russian: Ян Махлапу) (11 November (or 9 November) 1894 in Valga – in Riga) was an Estonian fighter pilot for the Imperial Russian Air Service in World War I World War I (28 July 1914 11 November 1918), often abbreviated as WWI, was one of the deadliest global conflicts in history. Belligerents included much of Europe, the Russian Empire, the United States, and the Ottoman Empire, with fightin .... He is known for being the first ace of Estonian origin. In 1915, he graduated from the Pskov Flight School. After graduating, he was transferred to the front of Riga, where he reputedly shot down five or six German airplanes. After he had participated in the victorious battle over Riga, he was named the Honor Citizen of Riga. In August 1917, Jaan Mahlapuu died from an airplane accident. Valga, Estonia
Valga (german: Walk) is a town in southern Estonia and the capital of Valga County and Valga Parish. Until their separation in 1920, Valga and the town of Valka in northern Latvia were one town. They are now twin-towns. The area of Valga is and that of Valka is . Their populations are respectively 12,261 and 6,164. On 21 December 2007 all border-crossing points were removed and roads and fences opened between the two countries with both countries joining the Schengen Agreement.
