Józef Chałasiński
Józef Chałasiński (17 February 1904 – 5 December 1979) was a Polish sociologist, academic and university professor. Biography He studied at the University of Poznań under the famous Polish sociologist, Florian Znaniecki, gaining a PhD in 1927. He joined the faculty of the University of Warsaw in 1935. Since 1945 he became involved with the University of Łódź (from which he received an honorary doctorate). Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, founding member of the Polish Sociological Association, guest lecturer at the University of California (in 1958), he retired in 1974 and died in 1979. Florian Znaniecki
Florian Witold Znaniecki (15 January 1882 – 23 March 1958) was a Polish philosopher and sociologist who taught and wrote in Poland and in the United States. Over the course of his work he shifted his focus from philosophy to sociology. He remains a major figure in the history of Polish and American sociology; the founder of Polish academic sociology, and of an entire school of thought in sociology. He won international renown as co-author, with William I. Thomas, of the study, ''The Polish Peasant in Europe and America'' (1918–1920), which is considered the foundation of modern empirical sociology. He also made major contributions to sociological theory, introducing terms such as humanistic coefficient and culturalism. The Polskie Towarzystwo Socjologiczne (PTS) (Polish Sociological Association) is the main professional organization of sociologists in Poland. The PTS defines its mission as "supporting the development of sociology and popularizing sociological knowledge within society". Currently the organization states to have approx. 1,000 members, out of which the majority are employed by universities or research institutions.
