Unitary Democratic Coalition
The Unitary Democratic Coalition ( pt, CDU – Coligação Democrática Unitária, PCP–PEV) is an electoral and political coalition between the Portuguese Communist Party ( pt, Partido Comunista Português or PCP) and the Ecologist Party "The Greens" (Portuguese: Partido Ecologista "Os Verdes" or PEV). The coalition also integrates the political movement Democratic Intervention ( pt, Intervenção Democrática or ID). The coalition was formed for the first time in 1987 in order to run to the simultaneous legislative election and European Parliament election that were held on July 19 of that year. Since the beginning of the coalition, the member parties have never participated separately in any election. The Communist Party is the major force inside it and has the majority of places in the electoral lists, however, the Greens also have an important presence, for instance, electing 2 members of parliament among the 17 elected by the coalition in the 2015 legislative election. The Portuguese Communist Youth ( pt, Juventude Comunista Portuguesa or ) is the youth organization of the Portuguese Communist Party, and was founded on 10 November 1979, after the unification of the Young Communist League and the Communist Students League. The JCP has a political relationship with the Portuguese Communist Party; however, it is an independent organization. The headquarters of the JCP are located in Lisbon. The JCP is a member of the World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY), a non-governmental youth organization that congregates several left-wing youth organizations from all continents. The WFDY holds an international event, named the World Festival of Youth and Students, in which the Portuguese Communist Youth participates. The Portuguese Communist Party ( pt, Partido Comunista Português, , PCP) is a communist, Marxist–Leninist political party in Portugal based upon democratic centralism.
