Jure Šterk
Jure Šterk (6 January 1937 – January 2009) was a Slovenian long-distance sailor, member of the Ocean Cruising Club, circumnavigation, circumnavigator and author who disappeared during a sailing trip around the world and is presumed dead. During his sailing career he crossed the Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean. Between 1991 and 1994 he sailed around the world single-handedly. Biography Early life Šterk was born in Zagreb, which was then part of Yugoslavia. He grew up in Vinica, Črnomelj, Vinica in White Carniola and attended a high school in Črnomelj. He lived in Ljubljana for some time, and received his captain's licence in 1977. Sailing achievements He competed in the Minitransat transatlantic race (Transat 6,50) three times, crossed the Atlantic Ocean eight times, the Indian Ocean twice, and the Pacific Ocean once. NZPA
The New Zealand Press Association (NZPA) was a news agency that existed from 1879 to 2011 and provided national and international news to the media of New Zealand. The largest news agency in the country, it was founded as the United Press Association in 1879, and became the New Zealand Press Association in 1942. Following Fairfax New Zealand's withdrawal from NZPA in April 2011, NZPA told staff that it would be wound up over the next four to six months, and ceased operation on 31 August 2011. Single-handed Sailors
The sport and practice of single-handed sailing or solo sailing is sailing with only one crewmember (i.e., only one person on board the vessel). The term usually refers to ocean and long-distance sailing and is used in competitive sailing and among Cruisers. Terminology In sailing, a hand is a member of a ship's crew. "Single-handed" therefore means with a crew of one, i.e., only one person on the vessel. The term "single-handed" is also used more generally in English to mean "done without help from others" or, literally, "with one hand". In the sailing community, the term "crewed" (or sometimes "fully-crewed") is used to mean sailing with a crew of more than one, in order to distinguish events permitting larger crews from their single-handed equivalents (even though a solo sailor is also correctly referred to as a vessel's crew).
