Junior Orange Bowl (tennis)
The Junior Orange Bowl is a youth tennis tournament, held in Coral Gables, Florida, for the "14 and under" and "12 and under" age categories. Boys and girls compete in separate draws. Jodi Appelbaum-Steinbauer is the tournament director. History The global Junior Orange Bowl tournament has as competitors the top-ranked male and female 12-and-under and 14-and-under junior players, from over 76 countries. The Orange Bowl tournament was founded in 1947. The "14 and under" and "12 and under" tournaments began in 1962. The Junior Orange Bowl tournament was added to the list of Grade A tournaments in 1978. Winners have come from over 20 nations. Past champions 1Prior to 1962 the event was a 13 & under tournament. Tennis
Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. The object of the game is to manoeuvre the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return. The player who is unable to return the ball validly will not gain a point, while the opposite player will. Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society and at all ages. Richard "Dick" LaClede Stockton (born February 18, 1951) is a former professional tennis player from the United States. In addition to his playing career, he was the head coach of the men's tennis team at the University of Virginia. for three years, from 1998-2001. Billy Martin (tennis)
Billy Martin (born December 25, 1956) is a former professional tennis player from the United States. During his career, he won the NCAA Singles Title in 1975, defeating George Hardie, and one singles title and three doubles titles on the Pro Tour. He achieved a career-high singles ranking of world No. 32 in 1975. Martin currently serves as the head coach for the UCLA Bruins men's tennis team, a position he has held since 1994. John Whitlinger (born February 4, 1954) is a former professional tennis player from the United States. Playing career Whitlinger played in 10 majors in his career. He won one doubles title in his career. Laurie Tenney
Laurie Tenney (born November 4, 1955) is an American former professional tennis player. Tenney spent her early life in New York, then was based in Los Angeles during her career. She was the first ever winner of the Easter Bowl junior tournament and in 1970 finished runner-up to Chris Evert in the USTA 16s and under national championships. Subsequently she competed in the main draw of the 1970 US Open, at only 14 years of age. Emilio Montaño
Emilio Montaño (born 18 December 1953) is a former professional tennis player from Mexico. Biography Montaño, who won the Junior Orange Bowl in 1967, was Guillermo Vilas's opponent when the Argentine won the Under-16s Orange Bowl title in 1968. He attended Rice University in the early 1970s and played for a highly ranked collegiate tennis team which included Harold Solomon. Following college, Montaño competed professionally on the Grand Prix and WCT circuits. His best singles performances at Grand Prix tournaments were quarter-final appearances at Hong Kong in 1976 and South Orange in 1979. Freddy de Jesús (born October 30, 1954) is a Puerto Rican former professional tennis player. Born in San Juan, de Jesús was a Junior Orange Bowl winner in 1966, then in 1968 won the 14s Easter Bowl title for the tournament's inaugural year. While competing in the 16s age group he won U.S. national championships on both clay and hardcourt. Alexander "Sandy" Mayer (born April 5, 1952) is a former tennis player from the United States. He won twelve titles in singles and twenty-four titles in doubles in his professional career, and was part of the winning tennis squad at Stanford University in 1973. Eddie Dibbs (born February 23, 1951) is a retired American tennis player also nicknamed "Fast Eddie". He attained a career-high singles ranking of world No. 5 in July 1978, winning 22 titles and being a runner-up another 20 times. Dibbs holds the record number of ATP Tour career match wins for a player who never reached a Grand Slam final. He did reach two semifinals, both at Roland Garros, losing to Guillermo Vilas in 1975 and to Adriano Panatta in 1976.
