Junee Shire
The Junee Shire is a local government area in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia. The Shire comprises an area of and is located adjacent to the Olympic Highway and the Main South railway line. It was formed on 1 January 1981 from the amalgamation of the Municipality of Junee and Illabo Shire resulting from the '' Local Government Areas Amalgamation Act 1980''. Schedule 1. The Shire includes the town of Junee and the small towns of Bethungra, Illabo, Wantabadgery, Harefield, Old Junee, Junee Reefs, Dirnaseer and Eurongilly. The mayor of Junee Shire is Cr. Junee () is a medium-sized town in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia. The town's prosperity and mixed services economy is based on a combination of agriculture, rail transport, light industry and government services, and in particular correctional services. In 2015 Junee's urban population was 4,762. Place name One theory is that word ''Junee'' which originates from the Aboriginal word 'Junee' means "speak to me". Another theory is that it is an Aboriginal word "Choo-nee" meaning "frog". History The Wiradjuri people are the traditional owners of the local area prior to European settlement. Leopold de Salis (1816-1898), pastoralist and later politician was one of the first squatters to open up the Riverina region to grazing. He established the 'Junee' pastoral run in 1845. Eurongilly, New South Wales
Eurongilly is a locality in the central part of the Riverina and situated about 19 kilometres north west of Nangus and 21 kilometres south east of Junee. Clarendon Post Office was opened on 1 January 1866, and was renamed Eurongilly in 1886. Dirnaseer
Dirnaseer is a locality in the north east part of the Riverina and situated about 42 kilometres south east of Temora and 50 kilometres west of Cootamundra. At the 2006 census, Dirnaseer had a population of 170 people. History "Dirnaseer" was the name of an extensive sheep run operated by Henry Scott & Sons, later Scott Bros. (Murray and Percy) from 1906 to around November 1919, when they sold it to the State Government for subdivision into soldier-settler blocks. The property "Dirnaseer" adjoined part of George Main's property "Retreat"; George and his brother Hugh Main, who owned a separate part of "Retreat" were well disposed towards the soldier-settlers, and were instrumental in getting the Soldiers' Hall started.
