June-Yi Lee
June-Yi Lee is an atmospheric scientist at Pusan National University known for her use of models to investigate the atmosphere and the ocean under future climate scenarios. Education and career Lee received a B.S. from Ewha Womans University in 1997. She earned an M.S. (1999) and a Ph.D. (2003) from Seoul National University. She then did postdoctoral work at NASA and the University of Hawaiʻi. As of 2022 she is an associate professor at Pusan National University, and an associate researcher at the University of Hawaii. Research Lee's early work examined rainfall patterns and modeling of the Asian-Australian monsoon. She subsequently examined seasonal predictions within coupled ocean-atmosphere models, with a particular focus on seasonal oscillations and the impact on the Asian summer monsoon. In climatology, the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) is a collaborative framework designed to improve knowledge of climate change. It was organized in 1995 by the Working Group on Coupled Modelling (WGCM) of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP). It is developed in phases to foster the climate model improvements but also to support national and international assessments of climate change. A related project is the Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project (AMIP) for global coupled ocean-atmosphere general circulation models (GCMs). The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is an intergovernmental body of the United Nations. Its job is to advance scientific knowledge about climate change caused by human activities. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) established the IPCC in 1988. The United Nations endorsed the creation of the IPCC later that year. It has a secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland, hosted by the WMO. It has 195 member states who govern the IPCC. The member states elect a bureau of scientists to serve through an assessment cycle.
