JunYi Chow () is a music composer born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Chow's music has been performed in many places, including Malaysia, Singapore, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, United States, and Canada. As a pianist and cellist, Chow plays Classical repertoire as well as free improvisations with musicians in KL, Beijing, and New York City. Malaysian Contemporary Music
Malaysian contemporary music (or "art music", "notated music") is an artistic phenomenon within Malaysia that has its roots in the 1980s with pioneer composers like Valerie Ross. However, little information about that period exists in written sources. The genre gained visibility and momentum only in the new millennium due to the internet phenomenon, and in 2002 in particular, when the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) programmed several works by Malaysian composers, namely Chong Kee Yong's ''Echoed Dream'' (2002), Sunetra Fernando's 'Wayang' (2002) and Tazul Izan Tajuddin's ''Sebuah Tenunan III'' (2003). They represent the first local commissions by a professional symphony orchestra in the country. The Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra (; abbreviated HKCO) was founded in 1977. The orchestra has won the accolades as “a leader in Chinese ethnic music” and “a cultural ambassador of Hong Kong”. It is often invited to perform at famous venues and festivals all over the world, having covered Europe, North America, Asia, Australia and the Arctic Circle to date. It has been acclaimed as a leader among full-sized Chinese music ensembles in the international arena today. The Society for New Music (SNM) is a contemporary classical music organization based in Syracuse, New York. SNM presents concerts devoted entirely to contemporary music, funds commissions, produces recordings and presents awards to young composers. The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) () is an American not-for-profit performance-rights organization (PRO) that collectively licenses the public performance rights of its members' musical works to venues, broadcasters, and digital streaming services (music stores). ASCAP collects licensing fees from users of music created by ASCAP members, then distributes them back to its members as royalties. Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra
Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO) is the national youth orchestra of Malaysia. The goal of this youth orchestra is to inspire young Malaysian musicians to appreciate orchestral music and to create a pool of well-trained musicians, particularly in classical music. The first round of auditions were held on 6 May and 6 June 2006. About 500 young instrumentalists aged between 14 and 26 attended the auditions from all across Malaysia. 110 were selected into the newly formed youth orchestra in 2006.
