Julius Vorster
Julius Vorster (29 April 1809, Hamm – 10 October 1876, Cologne) was a German entrepreneur, one of the founders of Chemische Fabrik Kalk, a major German chemical enterprise in Cologne. Life Frederick Julius Vorster was the son of Johannes Vorster (1758 - 1853) and Anna Marie Eleonore Proebsting (1777 - 1826). After a commercial apprenticeship, he opened a chemical business in Cologne. The business thrived, and Voster entered into a partnership with Harhaus, renaming the business Vorster and Harhaus. On 1 November 1858 Vorster and chemist Hermann Julius Grüneberg, who was a doctoral student at that time, founded Chemische Fabrik Kalk. Chemische Fabrik Kalk (CFK) (lit. Chemical Factory Kalk) was a Germany, German chemicals company based in Kalk (Cologne district), Kalk, a city district of Cologne. The company was founded in 1858 as ''Chemische Fabrik Vorster & Grüneberg, Cöln'' by Julius Vorster and Hermann Julius Grüneberg and was renamed to Chemische Fabrik Kalk GmbH in 1892. At times the company was the second-largest German producer of sodium carbonate, soda ash and was, with almost 2400 employees, one of the largest employers in Cologne. For decades the chimneys and the water tower of the factory dominated the skyline of Cologne-Kalk. In 1960, the company was acquired by the K+S, Salzdetfurth AG, which was later renamed into Kali und Salz (nowadays K+S) and became a subsidiary of BASF. Hermann Julius Grüneberg
Hermann Julius Grüneberg (11 April 1827 – 7 June 1894) was a German chemist and inventor, and together with Julius Vorster the founder of the Chemische Fabrik Kalk. Biography Grüneberg was born on 11 April 1827 in Stettin, Province of Pomerania, Prussia, now Szczecin, the capital city of West Pomeranian Voivodeship in Poland. He was the second of six children of the master organ builder August Wilhelm Grüneberg and his wife Caroline Henriette née Breslich from Cammin. One of his brothers was Barnim Grüneberg, who took over his father's organ building business. He died on 7 June 1894 in Cologne, German Empire where he was buried in the Melaten Cemetery. Honours A school, the Grüneberg-Schule, and a street, Grünebergstraße, in Kalk, a district of Cologne, are named after him.
