Julius C. Moreland
Julius Caesar Moreland (June 1, 1844February 2, 1918) was an Oregon pioneer, a successful lawyer, and a judge based in Portland, Oregon. He was also Clerk of the Oregon Supreme Court in Salem in the early 20th century. He is the namesake of the Eastmoreland, Westmoreland, and SellwoodMoreland neighborhoods. Early life and education Moreland was born in 1844 in Smith County, Tennessee, to parents Jesse Moreland and Susan Robertson. Julius Caesar was a name given to at least two other relatives in the Robertson family tree. Through his mother's side of the family, Moreland could trace his lineage to Major Charles Robertson, a soldier in the American Revolutionary War. Julius was the youngest of nine children, and his father was a farmer and a Methodist preacher. The history of the city of Portland, Oregon, began in 1843 when business partners William Overton and Asa Lovejoy filed to claim land on the west bank of the Willamette River in Oregon Country. In 1845 the name of Portland was chosen for this community by coin toss. February 8, 1851, the city was incorporated. Portland has continued to grow in size and population, with the 2010 Census showing 583,776 residents in the city. Early history The land today occupied by Multnomah County, Oregon, was inhabited for centuries by two bands of Upper Chinook Indians. The Multnomah people settled on and around Sauvie Island and the Cascades Indians settled along the Columbia Gorge. The ''Idaho Statesman'' is the daily newspaper of Boise, Idaho, in the western United States. It is owned by The McClatchy Company. History The paper was first published as the ''Idaho Tri-Weekly Statesman'' on July 26, 1864, by James S. Reynolds; it began publication from a log cabin on the current site of Boise City Hall. Reynolds owned and operated the paper for its first eight years, selling to Judge Milton Kelly in 1872.
