The Judo Federation of India (JFI) is the national sports federation for judo in India. The JFI was established in 1965, and received affiliation from the International Judo Federation during the same year. The JFI organized the first National Judo Championship at Hyderabad in 1966. An Indian team participated in an international judo competition for the first time at the 1986 Asian Games in Seoul, which was also the first time judo was included as an event at the Asian Games. India won four bronze medals in its debut international judo tournament. International Judo Federation
The International Judo Federation (IJF) was founded in July 1951. The IJF was originally composed of judo federations from Europe and Argentina. Countries from four continents were affiliated over the next ten years. Today the IJF has 200 National Federations on all continents. There are over 20 million people around the globe who practice judo, according to the IJF. History Since 2009, IJF has organized yearly World Championships and the World Judo Tour consisting of five Grand Prix, four Grand Slams, a master tournament, and a Continental open tournament. The Judo competition at the 1986 Asian Games was held at Saemaul Sports Hall from 1 to 4 October 1986 and contested in eight weight classes, for only men. This was the first competition of Judo for Asian Games. The host nation South Korea dominated the competition winning six out of eight possible gold medals. The Asian Games, also known as Asiad, is a continental multi-sport event held every four years among athletes from all over Asia. Judo was first included in the Summer Olympic Games at the 1964 Games in Tokyo, Japan. After not being included in 1968, judo has been an Olympic sport in each Olympiad since then. Only male judoka participated until the 1988 Summer Olympics, when women participated as a demonstration sport. Women judoka were first awarded medals at the 1992 Summer Olympics.
