Judge Report
The Judge Report (1985) or the Report of a Commission on Nursing Education was the report of a committee established by the Royal College of Nursing to consider a different approach for nursing education in the United Kingdom. Context In 1979, the Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors Act was enacted to reorganise training for the professions. The United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting (UKCC) had created working groups but not yet taken policy decisions. The attrition rate for student nurses at this time was high, with up to 20% failing to complete training and then another 30% failing to qualify. Royal College Of Nursing
The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) is a registered trade union in the United Kingdom for those in the profession of nursing. It was founded in 1916, receiving its royal charter in 1928. Queen Elizabeth II was the patron until her death in 2022. The majority of members are registered nurses; however student nurses and healthcare assistants are also members. There is also a category of membership, at a reduced cost, for retired people. The RCN describes its mission as representing nurses and nursing, promoting excellence in practice and shaping health policies. It has a network of stewards, safety representatives and union learning representatives as well as advice services for members. Nurses, Midwives And Health Visitors Act 1979
The Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors Act 1979 (c. 36) was an Act of Parliament of the United Kingdom. It received royal assent in April 1979. It led to the establishment of the United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting (UKCC) and national boards for each country of the UK, to be responsible for education, training, regulation and disciplinary action of nurses, midwives and health visitors. The Act was developed by a committee established to implement the recommendations of the Briggs Report of 1972. It was finally implemented in July 1983. Nursing And Midwifery Council
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is the regulator for nursing and midwifery professions in the UK. The NMC maintains a register of all nurses, midwives and specialist community public health nurses and nursing associates eligible to practise within the UK. It sets and reviews standards for their education, training, conduct and performance. The NMC also investigates allegations of impaired fitness to practise (i.e. where these standards are not met). It has been a statutory body since 2002, with a stated aim to protect the health and well-being of the public. The NMC is also a charity registered with the Charity Commission, charity number 1091434 and in Scotland with the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator, charity number SC038362. Harry Judge
Harry George Judge (1 August 1928 – 2 April 2019) was senior research fellow at the Department of Education, University of Oxford and emeritus fellow of Brasenose College, Oxford. He was director of the Department of Educational Studies from 1973 to 1988. His 80th birthday was marked by the publication of a special volume of the Oxford Review of Education. He was the honorary president of the Oxford Education Society. Born in Cardiff, after two years in the Royal Air Force he studied at Brasenose College, taking degrees in Modern History and in Theology. While teaching in schools in London and Surrey he completed a Ph.D. in French history and in 1959 was invited to become director of studies at the St Katharine’s Foundation, Cumberland Lodge. The National Health Service (NHS) is the umbrella term for the publicly funded healthcare systems of the United Kingdom (UK). Since 1948, they have been funded out of general taxation. Project 2000
Project 2000 was a higher education scheme in the United Kingdom for nursing qualifications, introduced in 1990 by the United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting (UKCC), later the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). History Methods and procedures in nursing were becoming more knowledge-led. Instead of the former apprenticeship system, whereby nurses were trained at hospitals, the Project 2000 scheme was to contract the training of nurses out to British universities. State Enrolled Nurses (SENs) previously had two years of training. State Registered Nurses (SRNs) were fully qualified nurses before 1990. The Briggs Report (1972) was the Report of the Committee on Nursing in the United Kingdom, which reviewed the role of Nursing, nurses and Midwife, midwives in hospitals and in community care. Salmon Report
The Salmon Report (1966) or the Salmon Report on Senior Nursing Staff Structure was the report of a committee established to bring standardisation in structure and pay for senior hospital nurses in England and Scotland. The report recommended changes to how nurses jobs were categorised in hospitals and management training for nurses. Context Following the creation of the National Health Service in 1948, there was confusion in how nursing was administered. The senior nurse in an organisation held the title of "matron", but there were wide differences in the amount of responsibility and the amount of pay they received: some matrons managed hospitals of only 20 beds, whilst others oversaw hospitals with hundreds. Platt Report 1964
The Platt Report (1964) or the Platt Report(s) on the Reform of Nursing Education was the report of Harry Platt upon the investigations of a committee established by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN). It made recommendations about how Nursing, nurses should be educated and what prior qualifications should be required in order to begin Nurse education, nurse training in England. Context By the 1960s, problems with recruitment of nurses to the National Health Service had been identified by studies, questionnaires, and job analyses. As many as 10,000 students failed to complete training and wastage rates were as high as 50 percent.
