Salmon Report
The Salmon Report (1966) or the Salmon Report on Senior Nursing Staff Structure was the report of a committee established to bring standardisation in structure and pay for senior hospital nurses in England and Scotland. The report recommended changes to how nurses jobs were categorised in hospitals and management training for nurses. Context Following the creation of the National Health Service in 1948, there was confusion in how nursing was administered. The senior nurse in an organisation held the title of "matron", but there were wide differences in the amount of responsibility and the amount of pay they received: some matrons managed hospitals of only 20 beds, whilst others oversaw hospitals with hundreds. National Health Service
The National Health Service (NHS) is the umbrella term for the publicly funded healthcare systems of the United Kingdom (UK). Since 1948, they have been funded out of general taxation. Nursing in the United Kingdom has a long history. The current form of nursing is often considered as beginning with Florence Nightingale who pioneered modern nursing. Platt Report 1964
The Platt Report (1964) or the Platt Report(s) on the Reform of Nursing Education was the report of Harry Platt upon the investigations of a committee established by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN). It made recommendations about how Nursing, nurses should be educated and what prior qualifications should be required in order to begin Nurse education, nurse training in England. Context By the 1960s, problems with recruitment of nurses to the National Health Service had been identified by studies, questionnaires, and job analyses. As many as 10,000 students failed to complete training and wastage rates were as high as 50 percent. Cumberlege Report 1986
The Cumberlege Report (1986) or Neighbourhood nursing: a focus for care was the report of a Department of Health and Social Security (DHSS) committee advocating that community nurses in the United Kingdom be permitted to prescribe from a restricted list of treatments. Context A committee was created in 1985 by the DHSS to review the care provided by nurses and health visitors outside hospitals and report on how resources could be used more effectively. Briggs Report
The Briggs Report (1972) was the Report of the Committee on Nursing in the United Kingdom, which reviewed the role of Nursing, nurses and Midwife, midwives in hospitals and in community care. Mayston Report
The Mayston Report (1969) or the Report on Management Structure in the Local Authority Nursing Services was the report of a working party appointed to consider improvements to the management of United Kingdom local authority nursing services in the way that the Salmon Report had examined management of hospital nurses. Context The working party had been set up after Salmon and due to the recommendations of the Prices and Incomes Board to ensure that the pay and hierarchy of local authority nurses be linked with those of nurses in hospital services. A nurses' pay claim was in progress when the group was established in 1968 so a report was required in autumn 1969. Peggy Nuttall
Peggy Dina Nuttall OBE, OStJ, FRCN (1917–2008), as editor and later director of Nursing Times was one of the most influential nurses of the 20th century. Nuttall was born on 8 December 1917 in Romford, Essex. Early career Nuttall began her career working in a library with a certificate from the Library Association. She soon moved to study physiotherapy at the Royal London Hospital where she qualified in 1940 and where she practiced between 1940 and 1943. She moved to Guy's Hospital where she was awarded a teacher's certificate at the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy in 1943. Margaret Dorothy Green OBE FRCN (1929–2017) was a senior Royal College of Nursing employee from 1966 to 1990 and was instrumental in setting up the UKCC, the forerunner of the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
