Juanita Stinnette Chappelle
Juanita Stinnette Chappelle (June 3, 1899 – June 4, 1932) was a singer and vaudeville performer, as well as co-founder of Chappelle and Stinnette Records during the Harlem Renaissance era. Their record label was founded around 1921 and is considered one of the earliest labels owned and operated by African Americans. They produced 6 records, five of which they performed on. She was born in Baltimore, Maryland and attended Carey Street School. She was a member of the chorus of Whitney and Tutt's Smart Set Company in 1917. Thomas Chapelle saw her and recognized her potential as a dancing partner. They rehearsed for several days and were immediately a success when they began performing. They eventually married. Vaudeville
Vaudeville (; ) is a theatrical genre of variety entertainment born in France at the end of the 19th century. A vaudeville was originally a comedy without psychological or moral intentions, based on a comical situation: a dramatic composition or light poetry, interspersed with songs or ballets. It became popular in the United States and Canada from the early 1880s until the early 1930s, but the idea of vaudeville's theatre changed radically from its French antecedent. In some ways analogous to music hall from Victorian Britain, a typical North American vaudeville performance was made up of a series of separate, unrelated acts grouped together on a common bill. Chappelle And Stinnette Records
Chappelle and Stinnette Records, sometimes known as C&S Records was a small independent United States record label founded in New York City around 1921. According to the label, Chappelle and Stinnette Records were manufactured "by C.& S. Phonograph Record Co.", which in turn was run by the husband and wife team of Thomas E. Chappelle and Juanita Stinnette Chappelle, noted African American entertainers of the time. Chappelle and Stinnette is notable as the second record company to be owned and operated by African Americans, after Black Swan Records. All but one of the 9 known C&S records feature one or both of the Chappelles singing. Clarence Williams also recorded one disc for the label. The audio fidelity of C&S records is about average for the era. Harlem Renaissance
The Harlem Renaissance was an intellectual and cultural revival of African American music, dance, art, fashion, literature, theater, politics and scholarship centered in Harlem, Manhattan, New York City, spanning the 1920s and 1930s. At the time, it was known as the "New Negro Movement", named after ''The New Negro'', a 1925 anthology edited by Alain Locke. The movement also included the new African American cultural expressions across the urban areas in the Northeast and Midwest United States affected by a renewed militancy in the general struggle for civil rights, combined with the Great Migration of African American workers fleeing the racist conditions of the Jim Crow Deep South, as Harlem was the final destination of the largest number of those who migrated north. Florence Mills (born Florence Winfrey; January 25, 1896 – November 1, 1927), billed as the "Queen of Happiness", was an American cabaret singer, dancer, and comedian. Life and career Florence Mills (Florence Winfrey) was born a daughter of formerly enslaved parents Nellie (Simon) and John Winfrey in 1896 in Washington, D.C. She began performing as a child. At the age of six she sang duets with her two older sisters, Olivia and Maude.
