José Marroquín Leal
José Marroquín Leal (April 1, 1933 – February 6, 1998) was a Mexican actor, notable for playing a clown known as ''Pipo''. He hosted a children's TV show in Monterrey. He was locally known as "El Rey de los Payasos" (King of the clowns) and hosted the show from 1964 until his death in 1998. Biography He was Director of the Drama School of the Autonomous University of Nuevo León. Through this position, he developed a friendship with TV host Horacio Alvarado Ortiz which later helped him start his career in mass media. In 1961, XHX-TV bought the licensing rights to make the Mexican version of Bozo the Clown, and José Marroquín was invited to play the role of Bozo. After much deliberation, José Marroquín accepted. The show aired in Mexico on December 18, 1961. During this show, the segment ''Aventuritas'' (little adventures) was started, a segment that would later evolve ''Aventuritas de Pipo''. Bozo the Clown, sometimes billed as "Bozo, The World's Most Famous Clown", is a clown character created for children's entertainment, widely popular in the second half of the 20th century. He was introduced in the United States in 1946, and to television in 1949, later appearing in franchised television programs of which he was the host, where he was portrayed by numerous local performers. Creation and history The character was created by Alan W. Livingston and portrayed by Pinto Colvig for a children's storytelling record album and illustrated read-along book set in 1946. XEFB-TDT is a television station located in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico. It is known as Televisa Monterrey and carries Televisa's local programs for Monterrey, including local news, sports and entertainment programming. History XEFB signed on in 1958 on channel 3. The station was the first local station in Monterrey (joining XHX-TV channel 10, its sister started in 1955) and boasted the first Ampex video tape equipment in Mexico. It converted to color in 1970.
