José García Calvo
José Antonio García Calvo (born 1 April 1975) is a Spanish retired footballer who played as a central defender. During his professional career he represented both Madrid clubs, Real and Atlético (but was mainly associated with Valladolid), appearing in 355 La Liga matches over 15 seasons and scoring 12 goals. Club career A product of Real Madrid's youth system, Madrid-born García Calvo appeared in six games for the first team as they won the La Liga championship in the 1996–97 season, eventually totalling only 16 during his spell. His first match came on 2 March 1996, in a 5–0 home win against UD Salamanca ( Fernando Sanz, another centre-back from the academy, also played his first top-flight match that day); subsequently, he signed with Real Valladolid where he was a regular for four years, scoring his first professional goal in his first year. Real Valladolid Club de Fútbol, S.A.D., or simply Real Valladolid () or Valladolid, is a professional football club based in Valladolid, Castile and León, Spain that competes in La Liga, the top tier of the Spanish league system. In sport, a cap is a player's appearance in a game at international level. The term dates from the practice in the United Kingdom of awarding a cap to every player in an international match of rugby football and association football. In the early days of football, the concept of each team wearing a set of matching shirts had not been universally adopted, so each side would distinguish itself from the other by wearing a specific sort of cap. An early illustration of the first international football match between Scotland and England in 1872 shows the Scottish players wearing cowls, and the English wearing a variety of school caps. The 2007–08 La Liga season, the 77th since its establishment, started on 25 August 2007 and finished on 18 May 2008. Real Madrid defended their La Liga title successfully after a 2–1 victory over Osasuna.
