Josué Smith Solar
Josué Smith Solar (December 8, 1867 – 1938) was a Chilean architect. Life and career Josué Smith Solar was born in San Nicolás, Chile, son of American engineer Silas Baldwin Smith and Chilean citizen Leonor Solar Ojeda. Smith Solar studied in Chillán and at the Colegio de los Sagrados Corazones of Santiago. In 1885, he began to study architecture at the Polytechnic College of Pennsylvania, United States. In 1889 he traveled to Europe and returned to the United States in 1891, where he opened an architectural firm in Wilmington, Delaware. In 1894 he moved with his wife Cecilia Celestine Miller to Chile to reside there for some years, and they finally established themselves in that country. Portal Fernández Concha is a historic mixed-use building in Santiago, Chile. Built in 1871 as a commercial building including a hotel, it forms the south side of the central Plaza de Armas. It was registered on 3 December 1986 as a national monument as part of the ''zona típica'' consisting of the square, the former National Congress building and nearby buildings. Building The Portal Fernández Concha is a seven-storey Neoclassical building with an arcaded ground floor housing shops and restaurants. It forms the south side of the Plaza de Armas; the , on the east side, is also a commercial building. Chillán
Chillán () is the capital city of the Ñuble Region in the Diguillín Province of Chile located about south of the country's capital, Santiago, near the geographical center of the country. It is the capital of the new Ñuble Region since 6 September 2015. Within the city are a railway station, an inter-city bus terminal, an agricultural extension of the University of Concepción, and a regimental military base. The city includes a modern-style enclosed shopping mall in addition to the multi-block open-air street market where fruits, vegetables, crafts and clothing are sold. The nearby mountains are a popular destination for skiing and hot spring bathing.
