Joseph V. Graff
Joseph Verdi Graff (July 1, 1854 – November 10, 1921) was a U.S. Representative from Illinois. Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, Graff was graduated from the Terre Haute High School, and attended Wabash College, Crawfordsville, Indiana, one year. He moved to Delavan, Illinois, in 1873 and engaged in mercantile pursuits. He studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1879 and commenced practice in Delavan, Illinois. He moved to Pekin, Illinois, and continued the practice of law. Graff was elected as an inspector of the Pekin public schools in 1891 and served as president of the board of education. He served as delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1892. Graff was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fourth and to the seven succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1895 – March 3, 1911). The 56th United States Congress was a meeting of the legislative branch of the United States federal government, composed of the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives. It met in Washington, D.C. from March 4, 1899, to March 4, 1901, during the third and fourth years of William McKinley's presidency. The apportionment of seats in this House of Representatives was based on the Eleventh Census of the United States in 1890. Both chambers had a Republican majority. Tazewell County () is a county in the U.S. state of Illinois. According to the 2010 census, it had a population of 135,394. Its county seat and largest city is Pekin. It is pronounced with a short "a", to rhyme with "razz" rather than "raze." Tazewell County is part of the Peoria, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The majority of the population lives along the county's western border. History Tazewell County was formed out of Peoria County in 1827. The consensus appears to be that it was named in honor of Littleton Tazewell, who served in the U.S. Senate, and who became Governor of Virginia in 1834. It is, however, possible that it was named after Littleton's father, prominent Virginia politician Henry Tazewell, after whom Tazewell County, Virginia, was named.
