Joseph Laban
Joseph Israel Laban (born c. 1981, died July 25, 2021) was a Filipino journalist, independent filmmaker, playwright, and a Fulbright Scholar. Education Laban obtained his bachelor's degree in Creative Writing from the University of the Philippines at Diliman. He also attended New York University on a Fulbright Scholarship for his master's degree in Journalism with a concentration in News and Documentary. Career He was the Co-Owner of One Big Fight Productions, a film and television production company. He was also the Founder and Festival Director of thCineTotoo Philippine International Documentary Film Festival the biggest documentary film festival in the Philippines. The Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival is a film festival in the Philippines held annually during the month August at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Complex and various cinemas. Its aim is the development and promotion of Filipino independent films. The film festival is organized by the Cinemalaya Foundation, Inc. with the support of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and Econolink Investments, Inc. Each year, the Festival provides "seed investments" of ₱500,000 (US$10,000~) to ten independent filmmakers. It has since been increased to ₱1,000,000 (US$20,000~) since 2019.
