Joseph Jacobberger Country House
The Joseph Jacobberger Country House is a historic house in the Hillsdale district of Multnomah County, Oregon, United States, just outside the Portland municipal boundary. Leading Portland architect and civic activist Joseph Jacobberger (1869–1930) designed this Arts and Crafts style house for his family in 1916, and lived in it from 1917 until his death. He resided here through the height of his career, a period during which he designed over 250 commissions that shaped the face of Portland, including homes, schools, colleges, churches, a cathedral, commercial buildings, and others.. Joseph Jacobberger
Joseph Jacobberger (March 19, 1869March 18, 1930) was an American architect based in Portland, Oregon. He partnered with Alfred H. Smith in the firm Jacobberger and Smith. Early life Jacobberger was born on March 19, 1869, in Lautenbach, Haut-Rhin, Alsace, France to cousins Hubert Jacobberger and Josephine Jacobberger. The Jacobbergers immigrated to the United States in 1872.Jacobberger's obituary in ''The Oregonian'' stated that he was 62 years old at his death in 1930 and that his family immigrated when he was two years old. Another view is that his family immigrated in 1871 after the Franco-Prussian War, and he died one day before his sixty-first birthday. However, the obituary contains other information that is undisputed. The family moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where Hubert Jacobberger became a building contractor. Hillsdale, Portland, Oregon
The Hillsdale district is a neighborhood in the southwest section of Portland, Oregon, United States. It is centered on the Hillsdale retail and business area, a series of strip malls on SW Capitol Highway between SW Sunset Boulevard and SW Bertha Boulevard. It is home to the Hillsdale Farmer's Market, which takes place on Sundays during the summer and every other Sunday during the winter. Hillsdale is also home to Oregon's first brewpub, with the opening of McMenamins Hillsdale Brewery in 1985. A cornerstone of the neighborhood is the Hillsdale Library, which opened in 1957. The building closed in 2001 for remodeling, and reopened March 4, 2004. When completed, the library was named a Certified Gold LEED Building.
