Joseph Gainard
USS ''Gainard'' (DD-706), was an of the United States Navy. Namesake Joseph Aloysius Gainard was born on 11 October 1889 in Chelsea, Massachusetts. He enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve on 23 November 1917. He received the Navy Cross for distinguished service while Master of the American merchant steamer SS ''City of Flint'', seized by a German cruiser on the high seas on 9 October 1939 but returned to him in a Norwegian fjord on 3 November. Recalled to active duty on 30 July 1941, he commanded the submarine decoy ship in the Caribbean, then commanded the attack transport in the Pacific. He died from illness in the U.S. Naval Hospital at San Diego, California, on 23 December 1943. Federal Shipbuilding And Dry Dock Company
The Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company was a United States shipyard, active from 1917 to 1948. It was founded during World War I to build ships for the United States Shipping Board. During World War II, it built ships as part of the U.S. Government's Emergency Shipbuilding program. Operated by a subsidiary of the United States Steel Corporation, the shipyard was located at Kearny Point where the mouth of the Hackensack River meets Newark Bay in the Port of New York and New Jersey. The shipyard site is now part of River Terminal, a massive distribution facility that is partially a foreign trade zone. Federal built numerous destroyers, destroyer escorts and a handful of light cruisers as well as merchant ships during and between the wars. Attack Transport
Attack transport is a United States Navy ship classification for a variant of ocean-going troopship adapted to transporting invasion forces ashore. Unlike standard troopships – often drafted from the merchant fleet – that rely on either a quay or tenders, attack transports carry their own fleet of landing craft, such as the landing craft, vehicle, personnel (LCVP) or Higgins boat. They are not to be confused with landing ships, which beach themselves to bring their troops directly ashore, or their general British equivalent, the Landing ship, infantry. , officially , were a part of the Japanese Special Attack Units of military aviators who flew suicide attacks for the Empire of Japan against Allied naval vessels in the closing stages of the Pacific campaign of World War II, intending to destroy warships more effectively than with conventional air attacks. Combat air patrol (CAP) is a type of flying mission for fighter aircraft.
