Joseph Edmund Crawford
Joseph Edmund Crawford (December 2, 1877 – October 9, 1964) was an Ontario chartered accountant and political figure. He represented Fort William in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1934 to 1937 as a Liberal member. Early life He was born in Invermay, Bruce County, Ontario, the son of Robert Crawford. In 1909, he married Jessie C. Baker. After moving to Fort William, he lived for many years at 136 North Franklin Street in Fort William, nearby his sister Martha at 191 East Francis. Political career He served on Fort William city council and was mayor from 1926 to 1928. Crawford was an unsuccessful candidate for a seat in the provincial assembly in 1929, but took 41% of the vote. He served on the Board of Education and was director of the local YMCA. Mitchell Hepburn
Mitchell Frederick Hepburn (August 12, 1896 – January 5, 1953) was the 11th premier of Ontario, from 1934 to 1942. He was the youngest premier in Ontario history, appointed at age 37. He was the only Ontario Liberal Party leader in the 20th century to lead his party to two majorities. Early life Born in St. Thomas, Ontario, Hepburn attended school in Elgin County and hoped to become a lawyer. His formal education ended abruptly, however, when someone threw an apple at a visiting dignitary, Sir Adam Beck, and knocked his silk top hat off his head. Hepburn was accused of the deed and denied it but refused to identify the culprit. Refusing to apologize, he walked out of his high school and obtained a job as a bank clerk at the Canadian Bank of Commerce where he worked from 1913 to 1917. Franklin Harford Spence
Franklin Harford Spence (February 22, 1883- January 16, 1943) was an Ontario pharmacist and political figure. He represented Fort William in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1923 to 1934 and from 1937 to 1943 as a Conservative member. He defeated UFO-Labor cabinet minister Harry (Henry) Mills in the 1923 election, was re-elected in December 1926 and again in October 1929, chiefly because of the popularity of Ontario premier Howard Ferguson - "A vote for Spence is a vote for Ferguson," he advertised.
