Joseph Bennett (British Politician)
Joseph Bennett (1829 – 1 January 1908) was an English merchant and Liberal politician. Bennett was born at Grimsby, the son of William Bennett and his wife Ann. He was educated at Wesley College, Sheffield and became a merchant at Louth. He was a J.P. for Lindsey Division of Lincolnshire, and for the Boroughs of Louth and Grimsby In the 1885 general election, Bennett was elected Member of Parliament for Gainsborough but lost the seat in the 1886 general election. He regained the seat in the 1892 general election but stood down from the House of Commons at the 1895 general election. Bennett lived at Louth and died at the age of 78. 1895 United Kingdom General Election
The 1895 United Kingdom general election was held from 13 July to 7 August 1895. William Gladstone had retired as Prime Minister the previous year, and Queen Victoria, disregarding Gladstone's advice to name Lord Spencer as his successor, appointed the Earl of Rosebery as the new Prime Minister. Rosebery's government found itself largely in a state of paralysis due to a power struggle between him and William Harcourt, the Liberal leader in the Commons. The situation came to a head on 21 June, when Parliament voted to dismiss Secretary of State for War Henry Campbell-Bannerman; Rosebery, realising that the government would likely not survive a motion of no confidence were one to be brought, promptly resigned as Prime Minister. Emerson Muschamp Bainbridge
Emerson Muschamp Bainbridge (5 December 1845 – 12 May 1911) was an English mining consulting engineer, philanthropist and Liberal Party politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1895 to 1900. Life Bainbridge was born in the village of Eastgate and educated at Doncaster and at Durham University. He was articled to mining engineering with the Marquis of Londonderry in Durham College. In 1870 he became manager of the Sheffield and Tinsley Collieries, and soon afterwards he was in charge of the Nunnery pits on behalf of the Duke of Norfolk. These were turned into a limited company in 1874, and he then became managing director with a controlling interest. In 1873 was awarded the Hermon prize for an essay on the prevention of mine explosions. He was head of a noted firm of mining consulting engineers. In 1889 Bainbridge, obtained a lease from the Duke of Portland for the Tophard or Barnsley coal, under areas of land in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. He then founded the ... Henry Eyre (British Army Officer)
Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Eyre (4 February 1834 – 24 June 1904) was a British Army officer and Conservative Party (UK), Conservative Party politician. Eyre was born the son of Rev. Charles Wasteneys Eyre, Rector of Carlton in Lindrick, Nottinghamshire and was educated at Harrow and Christ Church, Oxford. He inherited Rampton Manor from his father in 1862. A Rifle Brigade officer, he served in the Crimean War, being present at the Siege of Sevastopol (1854–55), siege and fall of Sebastopol and wounded at the Battle at the Redan, assault of the Redan. He served throughout the Indian Mutiny and was present at the Capture of Lucknow, taking of Lucknow, capture of Mynponee and operations in the Central India Campaign (1858), Central India Campaign on the Ram Gunga River. Grimsby or Great Grimsby is a port town and the administrative centre of North East Lincolnshire, Lincolnshire, England. Grimsby adjoins the town of Cleethorpes directly to the south-east forming a conurbation. 1892 United Kingdom General Election
The 1892 United Kingdom general election was held from 4 to 26 July 1892. It saw the Conservatives, led by Lord Salisbury again win the greatest number of seats, but no longer a majority as William Ewart Gladstone's Liberals won 80 more seats than in the 1886 general election. The Liberal Unionists who had previously supported the Conservative government saw their vote and seat numbers go down. Despite being split between Parnellite and anti-Parnellite factions, the Irish Nationalist vote held up well. As the Liberals did not have a majority on their own, Salisbury refused to resign on hearing the election results and waited to be defeated in a vote of no confidence on 11 August. Gladstone formed a minority government dependent on Irish Nationalist support. The Liberals had engaged in failed attempts at reunification between 1886 and 1887.
