Joseph August
Joseph H. August, A.S.C. (26 April 1890 – 25 September 1947) was an American cinematographer and co-founder of the American Society of Cinematographers. His films included ''Gunga Din'' (1939) for which he was nominated for Academy Award for Best Cinematography, ''The Hunchback of Notre Dame'' (1939), ''The Devil and Daniel Webster'' (1941), and ''Portrait of Jennie'' (1948). He died in 1947 shortly after completing the filming of ''Portrait of Jennie''. He received his second Oscar nomination, posthumously, for this film. His son, Joseph A. August (1916–2006), was also a cinematographer. Idaho Springs, Colorado
The City of Idaho Springs is the Statutory City that is the most populous municipality in Clear Creek County, Colorado, United States. Idaho Springs is a part of the Denver–Aurora–Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 1,717. Idaho Springs is located in Clear Creek Canyon, in the mountains upstream from Golden, some west of Denver. Founded in 1859 by prospectors during the early days of the Pike's Peak Gold Rush, the town was at the center of the region's mining district throughout the late nineteenth century. The Argo Tunnel drained and provided access to many lodes of ore between Idaho Springs and Central City. ''Selfish Yates'' is a 1918 American silent Western film starring William S. Hart. It was directed by and co-produced by Hart along with Thomas H. Ince. Paramount Pictures handled distribution. This is a surviving Hart western at the Museum of Modern Art. Plot As described in a film magazine, Mary Adams (Novak), her sister Betty (Salter), and her dying father arrive at the town of Thirsty Center which is ruled by "Selfish" Yates. After the death of her father, Mary scrubs the floors of the dance hall and cooks for Yates. However, soon her finer qualities awaken a spark of manhood in Yates and he sets her to work teaching his protege Hotfoot. It is directed by Roy William Neill and stars Alan Dinehart, Mae Clarke and Neil Hamilton. Plot When John Duncan becomes ill, he moves in with his cousin, Robert Waldo, who is an attorney. As his illness worsens, his doctor, David Graham, gives him the bad news that it is terminal. When Duncan decides to split his estate between Waldo and Graham, Waldo hatches a plot which he feels will allow him to inherit the entire fortune. The first step involves convincing Duncan to leave his whole fortune to Graham in his will. With Graham now having a perfect motive for murder, Waldo plans to kill Duncan and frame Graham. ''Up the River'' is a 1930 American pre-Code comedy film directed by John Ford, and starring Claire Luce, Spencer Tracy and Humphrey Bogart. The plot concerns escaped convicts, as well as a female convict. It was the feature film debut role of both Tracy and Bogart. Despite Bogart being billed fourth (under top-billed Tracy, Claire Luce and Warren Hymer), Tracy's and Bogart's roles were almost equally large, and this is the only film in which they appeared together. ''Tumbleweeds'' is a 1925 American silent Western film starring and produced by William S. Hart. It depicts the Cherokee Strip land rush of 1893. The film is said to have influenced the Oscar-winning 1931 Western '' Cimarron'', which also depicts the land rush.
