The Silent Witness (1932 Film)
''The Silent Witness'' is a 1932 American mystery film directed by Marcel Varnel and starring Lionel Atwill, Greta Nissen and Helen Mack. It was adapted from a play by Jack DeLeon and Jack Celestin.Goble p.954 The film's sets were designed by the art director Duncan Cramer who worked on many Fox Film productions of the era. Synopsis A London courtroom drama in which an Englishman takes the blame for his son who he believes guilty of murdering his lover. The real truth surrounding the case is only revealed by a silent witness. Marcel Varnel
Marcel Varnel (16 October 1892 – 13 July 1947) was French film director, notably however for his career in the United States and England as a director of plays and films Biography He was born Marcel Hyacinthe le Bozec in Paris, France. Varnel started his working life on the Paris stage, soon becoming a director of musical comedies. In 1925 he moved to New York City working as director in several Broadway operettas, musicals and dramas for the Shubert family. This was followed by a move to Hollywood where he directed three low budget thrillers. In 1934, he moved to England and it was as a director of British comedies – initially working at British International Pictures, Elstree, then moving in 1936 to Gainsborough Pictures – where he produced his best films. Among the performers he worked with were Will Hay, The Crazy Gang, Arthur Askey and George Formby. Bramwell Fletcher
Bramwell Fletcher (20 February 1904 – 22 June 1988) was an English stage, film, and television actor. Career Fletcher appeared on the stage in 1927 and made his Broadway debut in 1929. Hollywood and sound films soon beckoned. He made his first film in 1928, ''S.O.S''. Fletcher co-starred in Warner Brothers' 1931 film ''Svengali'' with actor John Barrymore, whose daughter Diana would marry Fletcher a decade later. He had a brief but notable appearance in '' The Mummy'' (1932) as the assistant gone mad. In 1943, he abandoned films for the theatre and television. He wrote and acted in the critically successful 1965 play ''The Bernard Shaw Story''. Personal life His first two wives were actresses. Francis Lumsden Hare (17 October 1874 – 28 August 1964) was an Irish-born film and theatre actor. He was also a theatre director and theatrical producer. Early years Hare studied at St. Dunstan's College in London. Career Hare appeared in more than 35 Broadway productions between 1900 and 1942. In 1908 he first appeared on Broadway in the hit play ''What Every Woman Knows'' starring Maude Adams. He served as director and/or producer for various productions, some starring himself. He started appearing in films in 1916. By his last screen appearance in 1961, Hare had appeared in more than 140 films and over a dozen television productions. Billy Bevan
Billy Bevan (born William Bevan Harris, 29 September 1887 – 26 November 1957) was an Australian-born vaudevillian, who became an American film actor. He appeared in more than 250 American films between 1916 and 1950. Career Bevan was born in the country town of Orange, New South Wales, Australia. He went on the stage at an early age, traveled to Sydney and spent eight years in Australian light opera, performing as Willie Bevan. He sailed to America with the Pollard’s Lilliputian Opera Company in 1912, and later toured Canada. Bevan broke into films with the Sigmund Lubin studio in 1916. Herbert Thomas Mundin (21 August 1898 – 5 March 1939) was an English character actor.
