Josef Sachs
Josef Ernst Sachs (1872-1949) was a Sweden, Swedish businessman and one of the two founders of the Nordiska Kompaniet department store in Stockholm. Born on January 4, 1872, in Stockholm, he became a student there in 1890. Devoting himself to commercial exercises abroad, upon his return he worked with his father and later became president of the Josef Leja department store in 1902. He would later serve as president of Nordiska Kompaniet from 1902–37, Deputy Chairman of the Board 1933-44, then chairman of the firm until his death in 1949. He was awarded the Illis quorum in the twelfth size in 1930 by the King of Sweden. Nordiska Kompaniet (colloquially NK, and literally ''The Nordic Company'') is the name of two department stores located in Stockholm and Gothenburg, in Sweden. The store in Stockholm receives some twelve million visitors annually, with the figure for the store in Gothenburg being about three million and the total number of staff around 1,200. ''Illis quorum'' (''Illis quorum meruere labores'') (English: "For Those Whose Labors Have Deserved It"), is a gold medal awarded for outstanding contributions to Swedish culture, science or society. The award was introduced in 1784 by King Gustav III, and was first awarded in 1785. Prior to 1975, the medal was awarded by the King of Sweden. The history of Jews in Sweden can be traced from the 17th century, when their presence is verified in the baptism records of the Stockholm Cathedral. Several Jewish families were baptised into the Lutheran Church, a requirement for permission to settle in Sweden. In 1681, for example, 28 members of the families of Israel Mandel and Moses Jacob were baptised in the Stockholm German Church in the presence of King Charles XI of Sweden, the dowager queen Hedvig Eleonora of Holstein-Gottorp, and several other high state officials. King Charles XII (1697–1718) spent five years with an encampment in the Turkish town of Bender and accumulated a large number of debts there for his entourage.
