Jonathan Faulknor
The Faulknor family was an English family from Northamptonshire, of which several generations served as officers in the Royal Navy. William Faulknor William Faulknor (d. 25 February 1725) first appears as fourth lieutenant of the '' Royal William'' in 1695. On 17 March 1707, he was promoted to the rank of captain, and given command of the 80-gun ship of the line . He afterwards commanded a frigate, and in 1715 was appointed to command of the 80-gun , flagship of Admiral Sir John Norris, commander of the Baltic fleet. In 1720 he commanded the 90-gun ship . In 1722 he was, for a short time, Master Attendant of Woolwich Dockyard, then served as Lieutenant-Governor of Greenwich Hospital until his death on 25 February 1725 ( N.S.) The Battle of Minorca (20 May 1756) was a naval battle between French and British fleets. It was the opening sea battle of the Seven Years' War in the European theatre. Shortly after the war began British and French squadrons met off the Mediterranean island of Minorca. The French won the battle. The subsequent decision by the British to withdraw to Gibraltar handed France a strategic victory and led directly to the Fall of Minorca. The British failure to save Minorca led to the controversial court-martial and execution of the British commander, Admiral John Byng, for "failure to do his utmost" to relieve the siege of the British garrison on Minorca. Admiral Sir John Moore, 1st Baronet, KB (24 March 1718 – 2 February 1779) was a British officer of the Royal Navy during the War of the Austrian Succession and the Seven Years' War. Capture Of Gorée
The Capture of Gorée occurred in December 1758 when a British naval expedition led by Augustus Keppel against the French island of Gorée off the coast of Senegal during the Seven Years' War. Keppel bombarded the fortress and then landed his marines to take possession. The French commander, Blaise Estoupan de Saint-Jean surrendered the fortress and the island. The 300-man garrison became prisoners of war, and 110 guns and mortars were captured. Admiral (Royal Navy), Admiral Augustus Keppel, 1st Viscount Keppel, Her Majesty's Most Honourable Privy Council, PC (25 April 17252 October 1786) was a Royal Navy officer and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1755 to 1782. Bomb Ketch
A bomb vessel, bomb ship, bomb ketch, or simply bomb was a type of wooden sailing naval ship. Its primary armament was not cannons ( long guns or carronades) – although bomb vessels carried a few cannons for self-defence – but mortars mounted forward near the bow and elevated to a high angle, and projecting their fire in a ballistic arc. Seventy-four (ship)
The "seventy-four" was a type of two- decked sailing ship of the line, which nominally carried 74 guns. It was developed by the French navy in the 1740s, replacing earlier classes of 60- and 62-gun ships, as a larger complement to the recently-developed 64-gun ships. Impressed with the performance of several captured French seventy-fours, the British Royal Navy quickly adopted similar designs, classing them as third rates. The type then spread to the Spanish, Dutch, Danish and Russian navies. The design was considered a good balance between firepower and sailing qualities. HMS St Michael (1669)
HMS ''St Michael'' was a 90-gun second rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, built by John Tippetts of Portsmouth Dockyard and launched in 1669. ''St Michael'' was rebuilt at Blackwall Yard in 1706, at which time she was also renamed HMS ''Marlborough''. On 5 April 1725 ''Marlborough'' was ordered to be taken to pieces and rebuilt at Chatham.
