Joker (store)
Joker is a Norwegian grocery store chain in partnership with Norgesgruppen. The chain was established with its current name in 1997, rebranding a number of local stores, including those in the former "Nærmat" and "Lønne" chains. Store profile The chain has about 450 outlets, many of which are small convenience stores with a floor area of less than 100 m2 thus allowing them to remain open on Sundays. After complaints by REMA 1000, a review of the stores in 2016 found that some of them were too large to operate legally on Sundays. Norgesgruppen took steps to close or reorganize the store layout to bring them into compliance with the law. The marketing images the stores as being run by "the local grocer on the corner". A price test found that items purchased from Joker are about 15% more expensive than at discount chains although still cheaper than items purchased from kiosks or gas stations. NorgesGruppen ASA is a Norwegian grocery wholesaling group which also runs various retail outlets. With a 43,2 % market share in 2018, NorgesGruppen was the largest player in the Norwegian grocery retail market. The business dates back to 1866 when the wholesale activity started up in the name of Joh. Johannson. Wholesale ASKO is the wholesale branch of NorgesGruppen. The wholesale business is responsible for the total flow of goods from manufacturer to the market segments in grocery retail, industrial household and convenient stores and consists of several regional companies, supplying groceries to NorgesGruppen's stores, in addition to a smaller number of stores outside of NorgesGruppen. REMA 1000
REMA 1000 (Bokmål: Rema tusen) is a multinational no-frills soft-discount grocery chain owned entirely by the Reitan Group (Reitangruppen). REMA is a short for ' (Reitan Food), referring to Odd Reitan (founder of the company). ''1000'' refers to offering a selection of only one thousand different products (see the history section). With their headquarters located in Oslo, Norway, REMA 1000 includes businesses in Norway and Denmark. The chain is based on a franchised discount concept: buying large quantities of a limited range of products and offering these to semi-independent owners under their brand. By the end of 2016, Rema 1000 had a total amount of 868 shops spread across Norway and Denmark.
