Johnson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. As of the 2020 census, the population was 22,680. Its county seat is Paintsville. The county was formed in 1843 and named for Richard Mentor Johnson, War of 1812 general, United States Representative, Senator, and Vice President of the United States. Paintsville () is a home rule-class city along Paint Creek in Johnson County, Kentucky, in the United States. It is the seat of its county. The population was 3,459 during the 2010 U.S. Census. History A Paint Lick Station was referred to in military dispatches as early as 1780. The site was named for Indian art painted on the debarked trees near a local salt lick when the first white settlers arrived and was originally part of a tract belonging to George Lewis. Flat Gap (historically spelled Flatgap) is an unincorporated community in Johnson County, Kentucky, United States. The community was named after the "flat gap" formed at the divide between the Lower Laurel and Mudlick Creeks. Flat Gap's first post office was established on February 26, 1873, with Henry Jayne as postmaster. Its ZIP code is 41219. Geography Flat Gap has an elevation of 815 feet (248 m). On June 2, 1990, one of the only tornadoes in Johnson County's history, touched down in Flat Gap at 1900. CST (7:00 p.m.) eastern time. The F1 tornado was 69 feet (23 yds) wide and created a one-mile (1.6 km) path of destruction. It caused an estimated $250,000 in damages. The school serves as the Johnson County School District's consolidated high school. As of the 2015–16 school year, enrollment was 1,048 in grades 9–12.
