Johnson, Utah
Johnson is a ghost town in Kane County, in the U.S. state of Utah. It is located 12 miles east of the present-day city of Kanab, Utah. History Johnson was founded in 1871 by the four Johnson brothers: Joel, Joseph, Benjamin, and William, and named for them. A post office called Johnson was established in 1871, and remained in operation until 1937. A ghost town, deserted city, extinct town, or abandoned city is an abandoned settlement, usually one that contains substantial visible remaining buildings and infrastructure such as roads. Kane County, Utah
Kane County is a county in the U.S. state of Utah. As of the 2020 United States census, the population was 7,667. Its county seat and largest city is Kanab. History The county was created on January 16, 1864, by the old federal Utah Territory (1850–1896) territorial legislature, with areas partitioned off from earlier Washington County. It was named for Col. Thomas L. Kane (1822–1883), a friend of the Latter Day Saint (Mormons) settlers when they first arrived westward, led by patriarch Brigham Young (1801–1877), in the 1840s and 1850s. The county boundary was readjusted later, first in 1869, when a portion was returned back to Washington County; second in 1880, when San Juan County was partitioned off and created; and third, in 1883, when additional portions were partitioned from Kane and added to Iron and back to Washington counties. Joel Hills Johnson (March 23, 1802 – September 24, 1882) was a Latter-day Saint missionary and hymn writer, known for being the author of " High on the Mountain Top" (hymn no. 5 in the 1985 LDS hymnbook, English edition). Johnson was also the founder of Enoch, Utah, and the founder of the ghosttown Johnson, Utah. Early life Johnson was born in Grafton, Massachusetts.Cornwall, J. Spencer. ''Stories of Our Mormon Hymns'' (Salt Lake City: Deseret Book, 1975) pp. 69-71. His parents were Ezekiel Johnson and Julia Hills. When Johnson was still a child, his family moved to Vermont. Johnson eventually moved to Cincinnati and then back east to Pomfret, New York. Latter-day Saints Around the year 1830, Johnson sold his farm in Pomfret and moved to Amherst, Ohio.
