John William Hanna
John William Hanna (August 28, 1889 – March 23, 1962) was an Ontario merchant and political figure. He represented Huron—Bruce in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1943 to 1962 as a Progressive Conservative member. He was born in Wingham, Ontario Wingham (2016 census population 2,934) is a community located in the municipality of North Huron, Ontario, Canada, which is located in Huron County. Wingham became part of North Huron in 2001 when the Ontario government imposed amalgamation on th ..., the son of John Hanna, and educated there. He took over ownership of the family store; he also operated a car dealership and was involved in horse racing. In 1917, he married Margaret Esther Campbell. Hanna served as mayor of Wingham for a number of years. In 1926, Hanna sold part of the business to Walker Stores Ltd. He died in office in 1962. Huron—Bruce (provincial Electoral District)
Huron—Bruce (formerly known as Huron and Huron—Middlesex) is a provincial riding in Ontario, Canada, that has been represented in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario since 1987. It was known as Huron from 1987 to 1999. On March 22, 1940, the Liberal member, Charles Robertson, died while in office. Premier Mitchell Hepburn (and later, Daniel Conant) refused to call a by-election for three years citing wartime considerations. He said the electorate was "sick and tired of elections." CCF leader Ted Jolliffe opposed Hepburn's choice and took the government to court over the delayed by-election. The Ontario Court of Appeal sided with the government on the issue. Jolliffe said that he would appeal the decision to the Supreme Court but no further action was taken before the 1943 election was called. Wingham (2016 census population 2,934) is a community located in the municipality of North Huron, Ontario, Canada, which is located in Huron County. Wingham became part of North Huron in 2001 when the Ontario government imposed amalgamation on the former township of East Wawanosh, the village of Blyth, and the town of Wingham. Wingham is located at the intersection of County Roads 4 and 86. Most of Wingham is located between County Road 86 to the south and the Maitland River to the north. History The original survey for Wingham was conducted in 1854, with 1,000 acres dedicated to the community north of what is now Highway 86 and Highway 4. The initial townsite was oriented around the Maitland River, with the assumption that its water power and transportation opportunities would make it the focal point for development.
